Tidal, artist owned streaming service

Just seeing the news

Hope it does what it says

Kill spotify et all, money for artists not bankers!

I HATE this money grab. The greed exhibited here is epic.
When I buy Music I buy, Vinyl and CD’s. I want the artwork and albums to collect. They are mine after the purchase is made!
Also with Tidal you don’t pay you can not listen to something you have been paying every month for. This whole thing makes me sick to my stomach.

If you think the artist will get a bigger cut then you have been fooled. Jay-Z will just get a bigger cut. All he cares about is money, and his music reflects that.

As an x record label owner i have no idea what you think bankers have to do with it.

Taylor swift made 75 million last year but i guess that just isn’t enough.

i doubt i’ve been fooled
i was just putting out for discussion

i had over 2000 vinyl and 500 cds before my relocation os, professional releases, 30+ yrs in music etc etc blah blah.
so i think i know a thing or 2

and i see you’re passionate about it, great,
but you cant know how this new venture will work out for artists
and if it only makes a small increase in what goes into artists pockets, thats better than now

The “artists” supporting this service are the cause of the current state of music, and should be held accountable.

It’s almost delusional for them to assert that they are standing for “artists” around the world. They are a handful of success stories in a sea of millions.

Concentration of wealth, exploiting the masses and producing shit music.

If you don’t want to end up like these assholes, find a way to be financially stable/successful that doesn’t depend on creative output. At least that way you’ll make music for the love, not the popularity or the money.

+1
Also, BUY CD’s and Vinyl rather than digital downloads. This is ONLY going to make the already super greedy, entirely money-motivated Jay-Z and Alicia Keys and few others more wealthy…this is not “spreading the wealth around”.
I think Clunky is the FOOL who’s been mentally fooled…LOL!

The ultra pessimist in me just see this as Jay’s diversification into tech, since the lines between that and entertainment are rapidly blurring or are already gone. Big record labels probably won’t exist in the way they do in a decade and it’ll be mostly about hosting of work on servers to be accessed for distribution in different ways. What will exist will be hosting sites and management. He wants in, obviously.

I get why they dragged out all these heavy hitters, as they wanted to make a big legitimate splash. But i think peoples dismissal has more to do with the ever widening class divide, and not just with artists/creators and the gate keepers, but with society in general. I suppose you would need this type of backing to make anything like this even possible, but it seems like another same old scenario to me. It’s how capital works.

Well said Justin! if other artist were given some of the spotlight these chumps would be a side note in music history and the bar would be raised back to where it should be. But that might not work too well for they’re wallets and the labels wouldn’t be working with people willing to do anything they are told.

Bandcamp still works the best in my opinion. I get to buy music from artists I like, and sell music to fans directly.

The music I buy is mine to keep and stream forever. Sure, Bandcamp takes a cut but it’s supremely reasonable considering what’s being offered.

Long live Bandcamp!

I smell a tidal wave of poopoo…

If they really cared about music and artists they would spend atleast half of their capital on free instruments - lessons - and rehursal spaces for Young people who don’t have possibilities. By accident I saw on TV how madonna signed and I allmost had to vomit. ( Maybe some of them do - I don’t know ) but then I would have heart this no ?
Sorry, my Engish is crapp .

They made it seem like a music service for people who do not like music. Their press conference featured artists I can hear anywhere for free. Why would someone pay for it?

i understand where you’re coming from, the purity of art
but
say if your band/making music and it becomes popular and you start to make money, what should you do?

of course you’re going to go for it, be silly not too
here a few things to consider:

-being able to spend all your time on music,
-calling your parents and saying ‘nah nah nah naaah see, wasnt wasting my time’
-able to work with top level pro engineers, musos and studios, knowledge bombs galore
-playing in front of huge crowds is rather addictive you know
-and few can resist the adoration of the opposite/same sex.
-being on the same bill as your heroes and meeting them
-playing lots of gigs and becoming very very good as a live player
i could go on.

so calling people assholes for being successful in a career they wanted and most would love to be in is a little lame imo

so you cant have a discussion without name calling?

gear used to MAKE music, yes?
so
put up or shut up, lets see what you got
post your music, and let others be the judge

lol la lol la lol

in 3, 2, 1: more name calling, calls for me to post my music,
but
they never ever seem to put anything up themselves.

 :sleepy: :sleepy: :sleepy: :sleepy:

heres some random insults to make you feel more at home
idiot, dickhead, moron, fookwit

Just wondering, when are you going to sell half your expensive gear, fly to africa and hand out recorders?

Next level…Nailed it…

BTW Justin’s music is great and not to mention his Machinedrum packs and the contributions he has made here and at the old forum…

As a society we need to redefine what we mean as successful.

I’m pretty sure millions of $ per year can be deemed as successful…on the other hand, if I was a “successful” musician, the last thing on my mind would be to push for a tidal wave of poooooop. So, I’m kind of torn between the two!

Actually not torn at all, I just ask myself “is David Bowie, a very successful musician, part of this?” … NO!!! So yup, big pile of crap indeed!

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

This f’ing thing is gong NOWHERE fast!!! lol

HAHA ! All my gear together -
I’ll give you the price new - is Worth about 4.500 Euro …
But I’ve spend more time than you can imagine on the less - fortunate - and I’ve lend my Equipment more than once even if I had to for work years to get the money - and I’ve given lessons and recording sessions in some homes for homeless in Brussels ( for free ofcourse ). SO What’s your problem ? I’m talking about people ho don’t have to think about money anymore - and I should believe they care about me - or all people making music like me living at the bottem of sosciety ? Are you madonna in disguise ?
It’s a matter of intelligence to take care of the less fortunate. But ofcoarse some people think they can’t have TO MUTCH let alone enough.
Do you think you have to go to Africa to find the poor ?
I don’t wanna destroy your dreams making a living with your music or even getting ritch . But experience learned me that it’s most of the time not the rich who care.
As for the word " MUSIC - INDUSTRIE " for me there’s something I don’t trust in this word. As in " FOOD - INDUSTRIE " .
I understand these people want to keep the money in their pockets but I’ll never be part of their club anyway - wouldn’t want to.
I agree with your slogan " money for artists not bankers! " but ARE YOU taking all your money off your bank-account ?
If you don’t they have it anyway …
I understand if someone calls you a fool your ego gets hurt .But you could have known starting this discussion would give strong reactions. Don’t trow stones living in a glass house man …

.I appreceate your consurn… and I notice you didn’t get the reactions you hoped for. But in a way - do it all on your own or pay someone to do it for you … there’s many ways to spread your music ( for free )outside spotify etc … nobody obliges you…If you think these people are the ones you need … GO FOR IT ! But didn’t you write " I HOPE …

I think you’ve started this traed with good intentions, and the reactions broke your positive mood you where in bringing this news, but don’t forget that words on the net can come over very harsh … even if not intended so.
But I also understand the reactions, why should we trust them ???
