bought OT second hand with remaining warranty from Thomann Germany.
Now a button is broken, I contacted Elektron. They said I had to go through Thomann where I bought it / the retailer who issued the warranty after sale.
BUT
Thomann said to me once, they dont give warranty to 2nd hand buyers.
I have a photocopy of the original bill / invoice
what do I do ? what should I not do? Anybody got experience regarding that matter?
Have you contacted Thomann and notified them that you have the original invoice? Maybe already email them the photocopy.
If they say you haven’t purchased it for any reason (maybe it originally was a business transaction on a company name, for example), you could contact the person you bought it from, have him send you an email where he confirms you buying it from him and forward that to Thomann.
I have had great service and help by the people from Thomann, this should work itself out.
i’m about to sell my MDUW which I bought from musicstore.de over 2 years ago.
looking at their policies, they state explicitly that the extended 3 year warranty they are offering will be cancelled for a product that you sell on to another person.
only the normal 2 year warranty applies…
Trabant, dunno about Thomann, but if they have similar policies to musicstore, and your OT is younger than 2 years, you should be fine with them no matter what.
the question is… what happens if your thing is still younger than 3 years, but is somehow not covered by a retailer’s warranty…
on the Elektron website it is stated:
Warranty service procedure for machines bought from a retailer
Please contact their support if you need warranty service. You will then be guided how to proceed with your errand. Note that the Elektron three year limited warranty is in addition to any warranty your retailer may offer.
So if I understand correctly, if the warranty from the retailer is shorter than 3 years for whatever reason, you still get 3 years via Elektron… right?
hello husc , thank you for your insight … if Thomann is COOL they would accept it.
I have a written (not signed note) from the original buyer who “transfers” the warranty to me.
I am now in contact with the original buyer, who may not answer to me, which is a pitty, but he doesnt have to.
I am in contact with Elektron, asking them to forego without involvement of Thomann
Next step is contactig Thomann, and see what they say when I say, got a 1.5 year product, which I bought second hand, please fix the fault.
Hi Void, thanks for your answer!
Tomann has this shitty clause also in their AGBs (terms and conditions)
I think 3 year warranty from Elektron is only applicable to purchases made through Elektron Webstore, BUT I dont claim to be right …
I am waiting for Elektron response where I asked them to not go through Thomann, but directly to Elektron to handle the issue.
I am waiting to get called from the original Buyer
I keep my fingers crossed that Thomann will say "sure bro, no probs, just send in a copy of the invoice, its only 1.5 years, no matter who holds the OT

No. The Elektron warranty applies to units purchased from retailers.
Did the seller de-register the unit on the Elektron website when you bought it? Did you register it as yours there?
You may need to be patient for Elektron to get back to you. Support requests often take at least a week to receive a response, and it is likely to be even longer given the effort involved in shipping the new AR right now.
Good luck!

And in this particular case, the unit was not purchased from a retailer; it was purchased from another customer.
In the USA, at least, it is common for warranties not to transfer to secondary purchasers. That is one of the ways in which manufacturers make it more difficult for used merchandise to compete with sales of new merchandise.

hi PeterHanes
thanks for your thoughts!
if as you say, the elektron warranty applies to units purchased from retailers then Elektron must accept my warranty claim if I contact them? … I did this, and they said I should talk to Thomann … but now my 2nd Email to Elektron I specifically asked to deal with Elektron directly without Thomann … I am waiting for an answer
the Elektron Octatrack is now registered to my Name and Account
I better wait some more days …

then I said to them there is a Producers Warranty / Guarantee resting on the unit …
and look at this:
Sehr geehrter Herr TrabanT,

I have no idea what the document looks like, but you can forward it to the original owner, have him fill it out, scan it and return the signed document to thomann with an explanation of the problem. My german is not that lousy after all.

@ husc … that is true … but Thomann shouldn’t IMHO make such a fuzz in the first place … I may not get the original buyer who sold the unit to me to sign the document … 2nd hand purchase …
I was given a document to fill out and sign, B U T .,… Thomann refused in the first instance to give me warranty at all …
that is soooo fucking dodgy and malicious, I could throw my OT in their faces and collect their gold from their greedy teeth to buy an AR and an OT
Thomann accepted the signed document which I had from the original buyer (stating he would give me 2nd hand users warranty) and asked me to ship in the faulty unit.
Then they would inspect it and depending on their assessment would either handle it as a warranty claim, or bill me …
… totally (!!!) ignoring, that I already talked with Elektron and they said it is a warranty issue, and ignoring a video link which I supplied showing the broken button
Trabant, I understand your frustration. Just realize that they are a big distributor and their methods are also to protect them and their customers from any legal problems. There are always two sides to a story and when dealing with money/warranty there’s always a lot of added emotion. Just be glad and positive that your problem will hopefully be fixed.
hey husc … you are right , and yes I am frustrated … mostly to be told there is NO warranty for me , even though I hold the invoice … that pisses me off big time, I think, imho and in my not so humble frustration and aggravation THAT is the real rip off … think of what happens to the other millions of end users who do not get a signed statement from the original buyer … or loose it … jeeeee … i know I am repeating myself, but I need to speak out to protect others … I am like jesus in a way, or the 3 musketeers, or robin hoood

I guess that is the true power of small communities like forums, you have a place where you can share thoughts and most of all: VENT!
Let those frustrations out, discuss them or whatever! If we can find a middle ground between venting our frustration without blaming others, designers, resellers or products we have a good thing going on.
Hey Trabant, thanks for sharing this. I hope everything will be fine for you and that the issue is handled on warranty.
Personally I never thought there will be any problems with 2nd hand stuff like that - looking at eBay there thousands of offers for used gear with proposed rest warranty either for thomann or musicstore.de etc. For me that always was a good argument when buying stuff or to be able to call a reasonable price when selling something…
Y-NE
please spread the word!
that is like: buying a (sealed) second hand condom and then arguing it was only intended as a safety measure for the first buyer
I am still facepalming the shit out of me
