The Zelda thread

That’s why I’m playing Wind Waker right now. It’s just comfort food because I already know the game is great and what to expect. I can also save at literally any moment and continue from there whenever I find the time again.

I’ve grown to appreciate Skyward Sword a lot more since playing the HD version on the Switch. I never finished the original because of one too many Imprisoned fights but they felt like a breeze on the HD version  And even those Spirit Realm sections weren’t as frustrating this time round.

Twilight Princess was my first 3d Zelda and I still have a very soft spot for that one. People seemed to not like the wolf sections as much but I really enjoyed them.

I own Wind Waker (the one with the OOT Master Quest) for the Gamecube) but funnily enough never played it all the way through myself. I’m very familiar with the game though. I’m still hoping for the HD version to come out on the Switch 2 and it not be relegated to the WiiU forever.

I never played OOT (or Majora) so the remake will be a perfect way to jump in once I can afford to get a Switch 2 which won’t be anytime soon unfortunately.

BOTW was a revelation. The opening hours and just exploring afterwards are some of my favourite gaming moments ever. I think I spent like 50 hours before I even did my first dungeon, I just didn’t want it to end.

TOTK had a bit less of that because the familiar world but having it be as layered as it was did make up for that. I loved the being creative with physics aspects of it and the final fight is as chef’s kiss as Zelda endings come. I’ve not really been as completionist with this one as BOTW though.

Minish Cap is probably my fav 2d Zelda, Phantom Hourglass and its Temple of the Ocean King can fuck right off and I still need to finish Echoes Of Wisdom which I did enjoy a lot.

You own Wind:Waker but never finished it or Ocarina? Bust out a Gamecube and play them!

I also haven’t finished either of those games when they came out, but did just that about ten years ago. I’m really happy I finally did, the final stretch might be the best (except for the Triforce quest). WW original on GC is still as playable as when it released, you don’t need the remaster. Imo, I even prefer the GC look, although I only know the remaster from videos (and being able to sail faster would be nice).

I’ve never played BotW nor TotK!
Something always came up, or there was a new version I’d want to wait for a sale, or now I’m actually just holding off until after I play the OoT remake!
BotW I really want to spend a lot of time digging into. Soon!

I don’t think I can handle the 20fps goodness of the og Ocarina in this day and age. Unless the emulation runs a bit better on the GC.

Btw, I don’t have a GC console anymore so I’d have to play it on the Wii. I do still have a GC controller though, for the correct experience

That’s how I played it as well, works great!

Yeah, OG N64 might be rough. I played the 3DS Remake and thought it’s perfect.

Well guess who’s playing Links Awakening on the Switch 2? Remembered I bought it for my son when it came out for the Switch.

I 100%ed it on Switch and thought they did a great job with the remake, although the performance was surprisingly bad. But they released a patch to optimize it for Switch 2, and it looks and feels WAY better! It’s high up on my “replay” list for sure — I’ve played it twice on GameBoy and once on Switch, making it my most-played Zelda game by completions.

Exact same for me: once on GB as a child, once as DX on 3DS, once on Switch with the remake. So I played through each version there ever was once.

but I wish they found a way to sustain the feeling of the opening hours.

Isn’t that what the BotW Eventide island quest is about?
While the game gets easier once you max out it’s still no walk in the park for every player. You still have to apply a small bit of strategy instead of spamming your way through all the fights. I get Nintendo wants people to finish the game instead of giving up in frustration. For masochists there’s the ‘master mode’

Eventide was nice, but a bit too hyped up by videogame journalists for my taste, so that I was pretty disappointed when I eventually sailed there.

I don’t necessarily mind that it gets easier as you have more hearts, stamina and items. After all, that’s part of the appeal - you notice how far you’ve come. I’m also not a huge fan of brutally difficult games, so the closest game there is to the BOTW experience (Elden Ring) is off limits for me. I still wish they found a way to make the late game not feel like you’re completely dominating the world, that’s what BOTW after 100 hours felt like to me and TOTK is all about that imo. I enjoyed the feeling of being closely attuned to my surroundings, planning carefully where I go next and how I use my items, much more.
