Also worth a read: Stardust AND The Ocean at the end of Lane. I actually went to see the latter earlier this year as a stage show.
I don’t remember much about Sandman beyond reading one of the comics (fables and reflections) 20+ years ago… Will give the tv series a go next weekend.
Finished it too. Warmed up to a bit more…not much.
But Im certainly glad people are enjoying it; I hope it gets renewed. Its such a wonderful world. Cannot urge people enough to read it. If the “epilogue” is lining S02 up to be the “Season of Mists” arc, do yourselves a favor and pick.that.up.
My wife, who had never read the comics, felt the same way. I loved parts of it (ep. 5 and 6 esp.) and thought some other elements were a little clunky. Can’t fault it for ambition though and overall felt it was far better than expected.
The adaptation is not complete catastrophe, but I have quit after fourth episode and can’t find a reason to continue. It only infirmed my memory of the books - although I own them, I’ve red them only once, almost 20 years ago. At this moment I am not sure whether they are more kitsch than I remember or my teenager self was tuned differently… Or - most likely - the show just is not that great.
And something about the visual bothers me. The CGI aesthetics vs sometimes very raw drawing of the original. For some reason first four books were released as B&W in my country (at least the first edition) and I personally didn’t quite like even when they started to make them coloured - so this polished CGI product is way off the atmosphere I have originally asociated with Sandman.
Generally speaking, I think people who haven’t read the comic are going to be taken by the incredible story; I think people who have read the comics are going to be put off by the way Netflix tells it.
It is difficult to get even a great actor to say the line ”I have come because my Helm of State has been stolen from me. I believe one of your demons has it. I should like it back.” and not make at least part of you go ”Oh, come on.”
Yeah, the dialogue hasn’t translated too well to the screen in places.
It makes it hard to like the guy playing Dream, but I have to give him a break, because he’s basically eating a big shit sandwich playing a character like that.
The comics were meant to be read, not spoken. When Netflix calls me to work on Season 02, that’s the first thing I’ll do - tell the writers to write lines to be spoken, not read.
I just started it last night and so far am absolutely loving it. My dad is a comicbook artist, Mike Allred, and Sandman plays a huge role in the beginning of his career. So it’s definitely a bit sentimental to me. Just started watching this if anyone else is interested.
Yes, the illustration did such a heavy lift the comics to evoke the mythic moods of each episode, instead we have boringly perfect CGI over art.
The dialogue is mostly intact, but we get plain readings or soap/CW-style melodrama instead of something more mythic and impressive.
Do wish they took the updates and made them more transformative, but at least got to the last ep in the season. If they didn’t film it all at once, maybe they’ll have the space to work on the adaptation
I’m enjoying it, I tend to go into adaptations seeing them as completely separate from the original. There is no way a film or tv series can replicate the ‘imagino-transference device’ in our minds, so it’s not fair to compare them. The lead actor is a bit pouty for me, but I can get over it.
The episode in the diner was a fantastic hour of tv.
I enjoyed The Boys too, I thought it was funny they made the politics more overt to put the right-wingers off.
Please (someone) make a proper go of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?
I would say that it goes hard enough throughout, the Reznor/Ross soundtrack is pretty great.
I don’t know if I liked everything about it, but there are a lot of great moments. It succeeded more than it failed, and I at least respect that it wasn’t some bullshit prequel/reboot.
