The new MIDI Capability Inquiry spec is very good news

This, when and if implemented by manufacturers and software developers, should enable DAWs and hardware MIDI sequencers to implement p-locking in their step sequencers. The reason why p-locking CCs on MIDI sequencers is currently not quite there is because - unlike Elektron’s boxes where the sequencer is already integrated with the sound generator machine - the MIDI sequencer does not know what the preset value for a given synth parameter is, so that when you set a step automation with Ableton Push for example, the CC does not return to its default preset value after the step but stays at the new value, so creating p-locks requires more programming and becomes tedious.

The important stuff here is in the info box at the bottom right of the diagram above…
With the new implementation MIDI sequencers can be tightly integrated with the machines they are controlling and we can expect to see a lot of very cool stuff becoming possible… of course synth manufacturers can take years to take this stuff onboard.
