You know those days that you wish your electronic gear just made sounds without having to go into any menu. But what about a setup where it is only sound related. So im thinking toys like the Syntryx or Synths like Korg MS20 and 909 drum machine. Analogue mixer maybe. No menus allowed. And definitely no computers. How would you go about this? Its just as i said for days you want to play simple. And enjoy the sound.
This is my dream! I even have two of the “no screens” synths you listed. However, like a fool, I bought an OT as the “brain” and so I’ve failed… and also don’t make any music because the OT’s too hard.
Note
The negative parts of this message are strictly exaggeration.
Genuinely interested in people’s suggestions for sequencing and arrangement in this kind of set-up. Would you perform the track structure with mostly loops and mutes, or are there no-screen sequencers that’d help with most of a track structure?
(Although I’d probably just use Elektrons. Their UIs are so good, they get through my “no screens” filters)
That could be great fun
As Mono Synth I would tend to put the Norand Mono onto the table. No display on that box, but its visual feedback is really nice!
SH-101, TR-606, delay pedal. No menu diving, fun.
Norand Mono + Twisted Electrons BlastBeats
Each using their own sequencers - they are a big part of the fun
I use the BlueBox as a mixer, though, but barely look at the screen or change menu, it’s just there
FX: Eventide Space and TimeFactor, + BlueBox internal reverb, all modulated using the Bastl MIDI Looper
Acoustic guitar
piano (digital)
I never use any of the screens on my sequencers for sequencing the basics, of course when p-locking etc the screens become somewhat necessary but even there muscle memory takes over the visual aspect pretty quickly (talking OT and DT here).
I work with midi sequencing primarily, only loop when I want to add variation that can’t be added via my sequencers (looking forward to the Hapax to eliminate the necessity for this completely :)), when I want to mangle a sound / section from the current arrangement or when I’m switching patterns/sounds to “mask” my experimentation underneath.
Minibrute 2s has a great sequencer with function keys, but no menu diving compared to Elektron.
Maybe a cascade of several SQ1s?
My last 3 acquisitions were Synths with no screen : Vermona PERfourMER, UDO Super 6 and miniKORG 700 FS. Sequenced from a DT or played Live.
OP-Z, a guitar, and a radio
The only mistake I see is your premise that this is everyone’s goal. Having menus does not negatively effect the music making or playing experience for me. Others may have a different experience. Just like the idea that limitations will automatically equate to more creativity, when it’s more than likely a matter of discipline.
For the type of experience you are describing it just a matter of getting as close to a knob per function layout on whatever gear you are using. 909 type for drums or Arturia mini brute. There’s lots of synths with knob-per or close to it. From there guitar pedals as effects for same knob tweaking experience.
But you can easily setup an easy to start and play experience with even the most complicated gear with menus.
I think where people struggle is in both discipline and to a greater degree - going into wanting to create something with no structure or plan as to how to do it.
Walk into a destroyed kitchen after a big dinner party and it will seem overwhelming. Start by getting the sink cleared, then the counters, then the rest will easily fall into place. Meaning, with any setup wether it has screens and menus or is a DAW or a knobbed out piece of hardware, have a go-to structure for creating what you want and it will remove the distractions that pull you away from creating.
Distractions like watching YouTube videos or checking Internet forums.
T-8, J-6 and a couple of volcas or Monotribe is a great little setup too, fit in a small bag, ready to rock.
Often thinking about this too. No screen. no menus.
Moog sound studio + some recorder would be a nice package
If I have unlimited budget and being honest with myself, something like the Syntrix2, Perkons and a pedalboard. Juste to make noise and be an erica fanboy (pun intended). Reality is I buy samplers
EDIT: And the Terra form SOMA probably so I can almost make music on a piece of wood like real guitarist.
I see what you did there, real glass act sir.
Analog solutions collossus, Erica techno system. Moogerfoogers, a couple of strymon pedals, prophet 10, culture vulture, TD-3, space echo, dimension D chorus, arturia keystep pro and beatstep pro, Sherman filterbank, mixing desk… enough possibilities to go this route.
Clearly a guitar.
