I’ve had terrible times upgrading the firmware, but it’s running smoothly (more or less) now with only FW connected.
I bought a MOTU 828es several years ago knowing that if I have to add any Inputs/Outputs to my setup, it would be a breeze with their AVB line. Right now, I’m combining my first Mac soundcard (Apogee Ensemble) with my MOTU via ADAT. If the Ensemble dies, I’ll go with a MOTU AVB (probably a 16A, 24i or 24o). Most important : it takes less space.

If avb unit will extend the mk5 as adat. I guess it will solve everything.

I used to feel like this was a problem. I’ve had lots of set ups over the years. Bigger setups with a console and a patch bay / all manner of interfaces and line mixers. In the end I realized I don’t need all my kit hooked up all the time 
.
These days my kit collection is modest. I have a zoom L12 but I needed the mic pre amps when I bought it. If I didn’t need the preamps I would look for something else. It’s a flexible option though.
