That depends on the workflow. For more controlled randomness it’s the Torso T1. For more piano roll style it’s the Oxi. I got a 2nd hand T1 after selling both because the t1 works really well for drums too and has the CC Tracks for quick performance Makros
Thanks for replying. T1 is a nice tool for improvising, i do agree.
I’m looking for a synth for techno improv. Mono or poly. Sequencer not required. Knob per function a must. Analog preferred but not essential. What do you recommend?
Edit - midi control of parameters also preferred
The list will be a lot longer, but here some random candidates:
- Vermona Perfourmer
- Soma Pulsar 23
- Buchla Music Easel / Command
- Nordlead (any really)
- Moog Subsequent 37
- Roland SH-101 (and replicas)
- …
dfam or leploop
If you wanna go the cheaper way, Behringer EDGE it’s the DFAM clone at half the price. Lot of fun to be had, like Mutlu demonstrates in many videos.
Peak
(Don’t have one, but I’ve seen some legends perform live on one. I’d like to own one)
I personally only have synth voices in my 6U modular. Currently Quadrantid Swarm and Weston B2 bass voice.
I use Hapax as the master sequencer for techno improvisations. It handily runs all of my other gear and allows for easy control over all parameters.
I suggest you make a separate thread, as this is a pretty popular topic that will likely attract lots of discussion on the merits of different synths.
For those interested, the discussion is continuing here:
Not really techno but most definitely improvised
My daughter was watching Peppa Pig today and I used the opportunity to jam out a bit. This is what came out. It’s the DT on drums, a single sample (a bosnian tune) mangled on the OT in realtime and one synth voice from an A4mk1. Everything except the drums is played live (drums are alos live but sequenced
) .
Not quite techno, or rather not techno at all, closer to minimal, but we were just jamming with a friend, he has an electribe emx 1, I have a syntakt.
all the sounds and drum patterns were made on the fly without any preparation (you can hear how we select melodies :))
and launched random ambience in ableton.
No post prod, no mastering, only raw sound)
Really like how it sounds! Sounds full of life:)
Rehearsal with my new setup. Push 3 is in standalone mode. Still early days but I really like the setup.

there’s some techno in the middle alright
Interesting setup. Could you elaborate on how you are using the M8? I have 1 and whilst it’s a great device, I can not see me using it for improvisation!
end chain because of the limiter and master fx and also having some loops ready there. you could make something on the spot in live mode as well. it definitely helps me with my way of improvising.
Thats really good, hypnotic
