Of course not. I think we just don’t want it to end up with people posting tracks that clearly aren’t improvised. Personally, I’ve never had a problem with any of the posts here, I was only asking about the improvisational elements.
I haven’t seen anyone denigrate traditional techno performance in any of the posts over the last few days. I certainly see nothing at all wrong with highly prepared techno hardware performances. I love them. Most of my output is in this category.
But it seems to me there are some clear differences in the approach and the result for more improvised performances, and this is clearly a thread for the later and not the former.
I gotta say that I’ve been at a few jazz concerts/festivals and and some more improvised and some less, I mean, when they play Caravan, sure it sounds different and improvised to some extent, but it’s still Caravan, you know… and almost every time you’d hear a known piece or two…
so, if this is a “jazz” techno thread, I think it’s acceptable to hear some prepped stuff performed with extent of improvisation in form of performance rather making it strictly “start from scratch jazz techno”…
either way, I accept any outcome and wanna hear some techno in this thread, from scratch or not, just not the “press play and clap your hands while it plays” kind
This confirms what I was saying. But sure, there is bebop and there is free jazz too so in my post I probably was too confined to the notion of “free jazz” techno instead of more structured jazz from the swing/bebop era.
Of course I am not against anyone posting anything. As I said, I enjoyed thoroughly what Mutu Karakose has been posting. It’s really inspiring to see that level of cleanliness and performance being made on instruments I regularly use in a way less proficient way.
BUT, there is in fact, as others have pointed out (like TheAsp and Dave Mech) a case to be made for restricting this particular thread in some kind of way. If not, it would just become another “post your tracks on Elektron machines” or “sponsor for the youtube channel” kind of thread, which there are already a ton. Also, there was a very long exchange in this thread about what is considered to be “techno improvisation” and I wanted to add a few criteria that could be useful to understand what could be “improvised techno” and what could not (while admitting that everything is a spectrum and even very prepared set could be considered improvised).
Totally agree @Bojack_Coarseman
In other news, there’s a new STOOR announced at Paradiso in Amsterdam 13th of April. I ordered tickets immediately. One of my favorite producers at the moment, Rroze, is also participating can’t wait !
Sweet jesus! Rrose and Luke Slater sounds incredible.
Big up for Rrose, one of my favourite artists at the moment. He is not the improvisational kind of guy so I am very curiosious how this will play out.
Luke Slater- what a legend- also has a really daw focused process.
I really envy you for having the possibility to attend
I’ll be there in spirit, waiting for the youtube upload haha
I’ve got this on at present, and I’m really enjoying it:
So, i am not sure if it has been posted in this thread before, but he does live finger drumming jungle. Is that the benchmark? So why you need sequencers at all, if you can drum like this?
dude I love spinscott! I don’t even love jungle/dnb but I watched almost every video of his…
also… anyone knows beardyman?
Now imagine him, as a duo, the 2nd person a keyboard synth player, riffing with his drums.
That’s impressively tight finger drumming, very cool.
As for ‘Is that the benchmark? So why you need sequencers at all, if you can drum like this?’
Could you point to the thing that anyone has said in this thread that this is responding to?
That wasnt directed at anyone specific, it was to point out, that we discuss here about the level of improvisation too? Isnt it ? Its not enough to filter in a sound, or twist some knobs on a elektron device, to validate its a live performance, it has to be without pre made sequences. So i thought that video would be intresting to the thread.
Yes, so it’s an argument against a straw man, rather than an actual counterpoint to what anyone has said.
And you’re doing it again here now. Nobody has said that small tweaking of a pattern or filter invalidates a live performance. That would be a ridiculous position to take.
I said it above, but I’ll say it again. When I do a lot of my live recordings, I base them off pre programmed patterns and I create movement and variation with small tweaks. I enjoy working that way a great deal, but it’s not improvisation in any meaningful way.
Absolutly, a straw men does not need to defend himself. And i didnt attack anyones opionion personally, that is why i have put it that way. The question was if its valid to put your performance here, showing you twisting knobs, - if that is a improvisation, or if playing drums, keyboards, is the one thing that is allowed.
The other question is: Is a stefan bodzin show, improv when he plays the same show over and over again - while he activly plays his sub37, modulates the drum with his controller, but his show is often the same.
I think it is not so much a question of something being “allowed” or not, but about the degree to which a post contributes to the aim of this thread (as stated by the original poster 1664 posts above): creating “a hub for people to ask questions, provide tips and advice, share their setups, share philosophy etc.” with respect to “jamming/improvising”. So let’s exchange about our experiences and spend less time making normative statements about what is “boring”, etc.
“jazz” techno
Exactly what my coworkers hope I don’t play at the shop
…and back to the Improvised Techno. I’ve been listening to Blawan after he came onto my radar from a post a bit further up this thread. I wanted to try again & incorporate live looping, so hooked the Boss 505 template on LoopyPro and modified it and fed it some DFAM & Swarm and some FX.
According to Brian Fantana this is certified as 100% improvised , but for only 60% of the time
That was actually a killer set you deliverd !
