Wasn’t familiar with them, they seem like interesting dudes lol
Rhode Island was the home of a lot of interesting art punks that did weird shit.
It’s so funny to see this rn, I was just thinking it would probably be worthwhile to find those old Arab on Radar albums to sample from.
I’m still trying to find the Black Dice records from when they were a grind band. Also Volume Eleven.
Oh maaan heck yeah. Can I use the words soul seek on here? I bet somebody’s got 'em.
Oh I want the actual vinyl. Haha!
Ahh got it haha. Yeah I could see that being harder.
Yeah for a very brief moment Providence was one of the coolest places in America. I serendipitously wound up spending a little time there during that period. It’s unfortunate it couldn’t last. An insane amount of great art and music came out of there in a very short span.
Didn’t they all go to the same art school?
Sums up almost every bad I’ve been in!
A bunch of them did (RI school of design if I remember correctly) but there were also a bunch of kids who just grew up there and had nothing else to do but were artistically inclined.
The big driving factor was that the city government decided to subsidize the rent for art spaces and allowed for creative re-zoning of the glut of disused warehouses. They wanted providence to get a reputation as an arts town. You’d see all of these kids living in two or three story warehouses that were half a city block and the whole place was like $700 a month. Whenever you have lots of young people with cheap solid housing you get a booming art community.
Unfortunately the same thing happened that always does. Cool art communities attract yuppies and real estate developers and investors and it starts turning into every other boring city. The prices go up and most of the artists leave.
I think providence must have been kind of an “austin tx before the money came in” because it’s not just punks and noise rock, Sage Francis who does spoken word and hip hop is about the right age and also from (like born and raised) Providence RI. He was a journalism major so not design school but definitely seems like there was a thriving arts scene there at one point.
Exactly this. Other notable examples off the top of my head would be Portland, OR before it got discovered or Seattle before Microsoft got huge. All four of these places were “anytown, USA” and creative kids took full advantage of that in the best ways possible.

not just punks and noise rock

This was also the case with all of these places in their glory days. The best part was that they were all so small that no one scene could be fully homogeneous. You’d see punks at hip hop shows, poetry kids at metal shows, etc. Everyone knew everyone and their diverse interests would inevitably blend a bit.
I don’t know how many of you are bossa nova fans, but I’m a big fan of early stuff by Antonio Carlos Jobim, etc… My son’s recently started to enjoy it more and we’ve listened to some Joao Gilberto tunes. I decided to wanted to try and track down a songbook and try and work through some of them, if I could manage it. I was surprised to find there really wasn’t anything out there that I could find. Anyhow, I found a Brazilian site that had a link to a legit free book of transcriptions of Gilberto tunes. It’s worth reading through the site to take in the story of the man who did the transcriptions and his passing. Very sad. It’s very kind of the group to make this work public for players to check out.

Picked up a pulp and peel compressor pedal. No idea how compressors work but sounds nice now that it’s in the chain!
Sometimes I swear compressors are part of the dark arts.
Ha! I only had a few minutes to play around with it last night but it was night and day on and off. Possibly a keeper!
So I have what I assume is a ground hum with my cheap bass. It’s getting worse and goes away when the tone pot is turned all the way down. Happens even with both pickups turned off. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated!
