The Guitar Thread

Thanks for advices. I will give it another try but first tests weren’t conclusive. :meh:

I don’t want to spend my time searching IR that suits me, nor connect it to a computer oftently.

I prefer to tweak more settings as on HX STOMP.

You can also upload your own IRs that can make a big difference.

Pretty much done with the nitrocellulose neck refinish, bad weather made it take way longer than necessary. Made a tactical error in my endgame but nothing out of control, might add some patina to disguise it. Looks pretty good even if I don’t, I just get super ocd about these things. Waterslide from etsy worked out really nicely and ended up going like 1 shade darker on the fretboard.

Probably a little overkill with pictures but I wanted to show the color under a few different lightings.

That looks fantastic! Awesome work!

Thanks man! I’m pretty stoked with the clay dots too, wish I coulda got them a little more brownish like the super old dirty ones but for diy it’s not too bad.

@DimensionsTomorrow
How do you like the RC600 ?
I didn’t know you had one.
I have an RC 505 MKII sharing same OS since a few weeks, but I don’t have much energy to play and record things since I have a new job. (Enough money to buy new gear, but I hope it won’t be useless…)

cool, thank you for all that!
I want to run the electric side through a preamp for both leveling and EQ/tone reasons, so thinking an external approach

Currently: I run the electric through the SP404 amp sim /fx then connect both electric & acoustic to different inputs on my PA. Works great but not scalable and I want to get awy from the SP

I just tried sending the electric through the DR Baggs DI box then taking the output + the acoustic side into an ABY cable and into one (mono) input on the PA. Also worked fine:) not quite the desired tone but usable and simple.

The scheme: electric > tube amp. FX loop send > ABY/sum it with the acoustic side > Pedals > FX return
So the acoustic side gets the pedals plus a little power amp goodness while the electric side gets the full tube amp exposure.
Issues: matching levels? phasing?
I’ll try it if I end up getting an amp

Guitar with swappable pickup modules. I could see session guitarists investing in this, as it lets you swap between humbucker, Tele, Strat, etc. pickups and pickup configurations within seconds.

GFS does swappable pu, isn’t it ?
Interested in, not my priority.
@GovernorSilver, would you sell me on HX STOMP XL again ?
I liked the compact size, but apparently there is also a display difference ?

Seems to me the difference between the Somnium pickup system and the GFS Kwikplug is you must remove the strings, then unscrew the pickup. OTOH, the Somnium system only works with that specific guitar because of the huge route in the body to let you swap pickup modules without removing the strings.

Good question about HX Stomp XL. The greater number of footswitches combined with the discount offered to me at the time were the reasons I bought the XL. At the time I was thinking of using it with the band I was in at the time - more footswitches means easier access to functions, and less opportunities to make mistakes while playing with the band.

John Nathan Cordy has a better answer to your question I think. I’m not sure I would enjoy using 6-Switch Looper with only 3 footswitches and he seems to agree. He also points out the jack location vs. the smaller HX Stomp. And he points out other things…

Not a big deal, compared to soldering…
I guess the other solution is more pricey?
Only one guitar model ?

Thanks for the HX video link !

Yes, only one model from what I can tell. It lets you change a pickup in literally 2 seconds. With the Kwikplug a pickup change would take me about 30 seconds to loosen the strings, then about 60 seconds to unscrew the pickup, etc… much more than 2 seconds.

2 second change vs. requiring several minutes per change could make a difference for a guitarist who wants to change pickups from song to song during a concert. The pros seem to be used to touring with 3 guitars or more, but I’ve heard some of them talk about wanting to tour with less guitars - like taking one Strat with a humbucker instead of bringing both a Strat and a Less Paul.

I see a real interest for a professional guitarist moving oftenly.
I’m not, and I like the idea of a soul for each instrument I use, even if I modified it…
Swapping its heart like this…seems weird to me. But it is very interesting technically!

Same here. It’s interesting as a design, but not a guitar I would buy unless I got hired as a touring guitarist.

One pro I met last year brought his PRS Fiore to a workshop. He said he bought it because it let him get a humbucker tone, Strat tones, and Tele tones all in one guitar. So to him the cost was worth the convenience of bringing only one guitar to a recording session, rehearsal or concert. It doesn’t have the super fast pickup swapping system of the Somnium but it also cost several hundred dollars less.

Hey man,

I dig it. I don’t do any real midi with it, so I don’t know how solid it is for people wanting to use it for advanced performances or as part of a big music rig, but for my needs it’s pretty much perfect. It’s built solidly, and I love the looks of it. I had an RC-202 before and found these units to be the easiest, most forgiving loopers to work with (of the loopers I’ve tried).

The sound quality on the RC-600 is a big step up from the RC-202 and the old Boss looper I had before that. I keep it at the end of my pedal board chain, so I can record anything easily, and also can use it to play with headphones at night. I don’t really use the effects much, but I like having the onboard rhythms to play along to when I’m noodling. I also love the ins and outs, and have used it in place of a mixer, although I’m not doing that at the moment. Anyway, thumbs up from me! They’ve done some updates since I first got mine, so I need to go back and look at all the additional features. Like you, time is limited for me, so I just use the basic features I need and am probably not using it to its full potential.

It’s like those old Dan Armstrong guitars from the 70s. They weren’t the only guitars with (easily) interchangeable pickups but I think they were the first. As far as I know Dan Armstrong was the only company who did it who was already an established band in the market, nobody has been successful. Maybe it’s just never been the right time in some zeitgeist sense, or maybe it’s because they’re always really expensive, or maybe it’s because it’s a fix for something that’s not really a problem for most people.
I’ve messed around with a couple of the old Armstrong swappers and while it’s a really neat trick I felt like I could get as much variety from wiring up switching options into a four conductor humbucker with the (substantial) bonus of having it all self contained.

I can’t answer for others but I can say that I’ve come to enjoy rotating through my guitars and would prefer swapping guitars over swapping pickups in one guitar. I just love how my semi-hollows each has its own vibe, body shape/feel, neck shape/feel, etc. - not just having humbuckers… vs. my equally beloved Strats, which to me have become more than just a trio of Strat pickups.

Yeah, I have three guitars: Yamaha SG-800, Strat (had it since ‘91), and Tele (since 2011).

The Yamaha is my newest and main guitar now, as I just love the sound and feel of it, and the tele and strat are away in the closet, as I don’t have the space to have everything out. I occasionally switch out the guitar for a couple of weeks and it feels like I got a new one. I love that.

I miss owning a semi hollow and jazzmaster. If I had the space I’d definitely get one of each, but limitations are probably good. There is something so nice about a semi hollow though.
