The Guitar Thread

Yes, if you don’t have problems with your father. :content:
I broke the tuned up A several times, but probably with folks.

This worth a try :

Makes me think I also have this, not using it much but I should intall it again.

Anyone put their guitars thru the AH?
I had one on tryB4Ubuy but neglected to put the guitars thru it :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:
Then again, without mid EQ, is it more trouble than it’s worth?

Yes I did. Very clean distortion, much less noise than with Analog Drive. I particularly liked the Round Fuzz, based on Octavia Fuzz.

Sounded good thru an amp.

Sold, I don’t have regular style recordings of it, but this is guitar thru AH only, with realtime sampling / mangling with OT, no samples.
Sound more like a synth with it’s thin distortion and filter! Drums made from incoming sound too, previously sequenced.

i gotta try that one, E and B on the lower strings is a nice match.

So I recently moved into a place where my 50 watt amps aren’t really welcome. Really even a champ is too much. So I think I gotta get a modeler. I’m leaning towards the strymon iridium but am wondering if anybody else has heard it or prefers something else. I’m really not interested in a Kemper or Axe FX because they are spendy and if I’m being honest with myself, my Marshall 1987, 2204, and collection of classic Fenders got most of my attention when I had a wall of amps ready to go in my old studio. I really like my JC-120 too, but that’s a different beast. Thanks for any thoughts on modelers that you all might share.

Iridium seems good from what I’ve heard of it. The DSM/Humboldt Simplifier is also worth a look in the same price range. It has EL34, 6L6 and KT88 modes.

Having said that, if it’s not a space issue you can get something like that Blackstar combo I posted a bit further up and get the real valve sound direct out with a cab / speaker sim without making any noise.

I tune my 12-string ADADAD, it almost plays itself. Demands heavy use of capo of course.

I’m getting early skinny puppy vibes from that :+1:

TwoNotes Captors and Le ‘range’ pedals seem to be a favourite among my ppl. At least with the Captors you can keep using your favourite heads.

Very happy with HX STOMP.

Had Torpepos + power amp (VB101, LIVE + VHT Black Beauty) with Mesa Studio Preamp.
So heavy setup! Tubes not lasting bothered me.

Hx Stomp is much more versatile, very small.

I have the Iridium and it’s VERY nice. Definitely the quality you would expect from Strymon. For me, that and the Flint are a match made in heaven.

FYI, the one tube amp that I’ve found works for city living for me in an old 1970s vibrochamp. The speaker is really inefficient so you can get some really nice sounds at low volume. I’ve hung on to this and big old Fender reverb tank as it’s sort of the sound I was after for many years.

For cranking up though, the Iridium is lovely.

Get a two notes torpedo

Which one? Why? What preamp? With or without power amp/loadbox?
I had CAB, VB101, Live.

I won’t change my mind about HX stomp, even if the sound quality was a little under for amp modeling, parameters are better for me to sculpt the sound more precisely, many fx controllable by 2 pedals and midi control.

I was answering @5dollazz that has amps. So if they want to keep using the amps at apartment (or whatever) volume then a two notes type solution is the best imo. I personally have a torpedo live but would probably get a captor x if I were to redo it. Or the boss option seems cool, since it has super versatile attenuation options.

The Boss Waza tube amp expander? I’ve heard good things about it.

Yeah, seems to have the most versatile attenuation of that kind of box. I’ve never actually played with one tho, just the two notes offerings.
Of those I think the new captor box is probably the better offering in terms of options to price point, it has a 3 way selectable attenuator whereas my live has no attenuation at all.
But either way, if guys have amps that they want to play at home those types of boxes are the ideal solution imo. Best of both worlds imo.

Crap, that Boss attenuator/DI is tempting. Two notes stuff is as well, though selectable impedance would probably be important for me (I’ve got too many amps with fixed output impedance). I like the idea that it might actually get some real world use, if the real world ever returns.

I do also have a BF Vibro Champ and I love it dearly, but it’s still too loud for me rn, even with its wildly inefficient stock speaker. But yeah champs rule. I used to have a pair of them that I ran in stereo. Love em.

I read/watched a bunch of stuff on the Line 6 Helix Stomp last night. It’d def take some effort on my end to get over my 20 year old Pod-based prejudices against Line 6 and I don’t need or really want effects, but it does look like a solid piece of gear. I suppose those same prejudices also inform my reservations about getting a modeler in general. And I still have a DL4 hanging around so go figure. Really I drank the digital kool-aid for time-based effects and dig my Strymon timeline and reverbs, so that got me thinking Iridium.

I’m going to ignore work as much as possible today and try to weigh a modern attenuator against a modeler. Thanks all for sharing your thoughts.

My favorite amp is a QES Roadtripper MCM. It’s a “tube emulating” solid state amp along the lines of Quilter, Tech 21, etc. I don’t really care about how “tube” it sounds but brings out the character of my semihollow Strat, solidbody Tele, etc. more than my band rehearsal amp. I like the single-channel simplicity of the MCM. Sounds decent enough to me with my drive pedals. I don’t have to crank it loud to get a good sound, which I’ve no doubt my neighbors appreciate.
