I was saying that to Amanda

In that case carry on, just as long as there’s no mandolins before marriage.

When the Jehovah’s Witnesses stop discriminating against my soul, I’ll stop having a laugh at their doomsday cult.

Which one needs to stop?

Neither I suppose.

We laugh at political beliefs. We laugh at opinions. Religion is an opinion.

I’m not trying to start an argument about the virtues of being a Jehovah’s Witness, that’s not the point I’m making.

I don’t like any religion, they’re all bullshit as far as I’m concerned, but calling people cockroaches based on their religious affiliation seems to me to be at odds with the guidelines of this forum, and, more generally, the overall tone of tolerance and respect the mods usually try their best to maintain. Imagine my surprise then, when one of those mods then likes a post calling people cockroaches based on their religious affiliation…

We could sit here all night and list off all the frankly ridiculous/evil/stupid things that various religions are responsible for, but what good would that do? The whole point of respecting equality is that we don’t get to pick which groups do or don’t deserve protection, as we tend not to be all that reliable as a species when it comes to tolerance for our fellow man.

I always say that star trek is like religion and politics, a subject best discussed in private but I never really think about the religion and politics part, I’m always just thinking about star trek.

I never called anybody a cockroach. It was only implied by my reply, hence making the joke. You seem to have construed it as a direct verbal attack which it wasn’t. I could have written it about police or TV licensing inspectors. Would you still be making such a fuss?

I wholeheartedly agree, certainly when it comes to legal protections around one’s rights to believe/worship/maintain an opinion.

Regarding humor, I guess I just don’t see personal choice or belief as deserving protection in the same way the ableist/gender/racial/etc. groups merit. My point is that we make fun of people (here) for what we perceive to be silly or odd opinions all the time.

I do understand that religion is particularly thorny for a lot of people. Anyway, here’s Jesus being a jerk.

Police and TV licencing inspectors aren’t generally protected characteristics.

But no Islam one?

Are you one of them safe-edgy fellows?

The only funny one that I’ve seen I can’t find…I can describe it though: it’s a picture of two young women sitting next to each other in a park, one holding a bible open, and the other holding a Koran open to each other. They’re both smiling and pointing to something in the book the other is holding. And the caption is “Look, they’re both bullshit”
