The Cassette thread

I wholeheartedly agree.

im glad to see WAR is still making stuff. that boombox looks sick, but it is out of my range as well. i could be tempted by a deep sale price tho. i think i got my original walkman from them for like 30% off or something

This must be the filthiest, gunkiest, most disgusting Tascam Portastudio I’ve ever seen.

And it’s all mine.

Someone was selling this for 50€ and I thought what the hell, I need a new project anyway. Really looking forward to cleaning it up cosmetically, peeling all the stickers off and trying to get it to look as nice as it possibly can. Toothbrushes, q-tips, gentle detergents etc. The previous owner was not sure if it worked so at least the basic belt operation awaits I guess.

Not gonna lie the stickers add a charm to it… I would try to clean it and leave the stickers if possible. Adds to its provenance.

Got this one for my new Tape adventures!
Not as stylish as them old 70’s tape decks but it sounds really great

Congrats! I am a big Nakamichi fan - and I really love the sound!
Took a while to get used to the look of my CR4 as well :innocent:

Decks of the golden tape era - LOVELY!

Its really not that bad IMHO. I listen to C-cassettes with my WAR player and a minirig speaker, and it sounds decent enough for me. Sure, it aint a nakamichi by any means, but its not priced like one either.

Anyways, I’ve always considered C-cassettes to be a “cheap & cheerful” lofi medium. If I want to hear quality analogue sound, I turn to my Revox R2R

That’s for sure, but to me cassette is not only useful as a lo-fi’izer, when using a good old deck can be used similarly to a good R2R to impart some good tape character to program material. A different kind of character from R2R but sometimes more appropriate to the source!

It cleaned up really nice. And it seems that it does not even need the belts replaced. Everything seems to be in full working order. One of the best 50€ I’ve ever spent.

Looks awesome!
Do you plan to use it for recordings - or just for replay?
(Would be seriously interested in your opinion and the quality).

I own a second hand bookshop here in Finland that also stocks vinyl, cd, dvd, comics, video games and music gear so the Tascam will probably end up for sale in my shop. I have a tendency to look for very cheap things that I could fix and clean up and then put them in my shop for a small profit. I’ve bought a bunch of synths, guitar pedals and other gear for that purpose.

I have a Tascam 234 in my home studio rack for all my cassette 4-track needs so there’s no point for me to hoard any additional pieces with the same functionality.

Do you use it productively?

As an entrepreneur I barely have any time to spend in my studio. All my time is taken up by running my business. Would need to do a refurb on the 234 too at some point when I have a free day.

Usually I wait for a free day from work thinking that I’ll do some music but almost every time I end up reading a book or watching a movie instead. It’s not easy but I also don’t really take any pressure of achieving anything anymore. I’m 50, I’ve put out a couple of albums with my band and I’m pretty sure I’ll never put out another one.

Could have charged extra for the “road worn” finish.

Cheers!

Shame it’ll only be released in Japan.

True. I am glad that someone has at least made an attempt to make the mechanism a bit better. Seems like a step in the right direction.

I got a sudden urge to buy a 3 head deck again, to use it as a colour box. I had one denon a while ago but sold it as it was cumbersome to record. You know I really like how I can record my digis directly on my phone with usb.

Does something smart exist out there that can repurpose a cassette deck to output usb audio? Or some kind of smart cable? Or a modern deck?
