The Beauty of a Modular Synth

Just started my modular about a month ago, it’s just a 104hpskiff that will be filled when I buy maths in the next couple weeks. and i wanted to share my appreciation for it and encourage those thinking about getting one to give it a try.

I had no prior knowledge of how to start or “properly” use a modular synth and got interested after seeing a demo of the morphagene and a couple other sampler modules. Went to my local synth shop and tried out a make noise rig and a couple other rigs they had setup and was blown away.

I currently dont even have any synth voices and I mainly use it as a sampler and effect processor along with my Digitakt and deepmind. But there’s really like a module for everything.

I think one common misconception that’s kept me away is that it’s ridiculously expensive and even complicated to learn. And while the bigger systems do cost a lot of money and can be kind of intimidating, you can get started under 1k and definitely have something useful. And I think one of the most promising things about owning one is the potential to expand. At your own pace.

being able to completely customize how everything is routed and for it to be all contained in one system is really nice. I started collecting more gear and found it frustrating to sync everything together and hop around from this to that. This reverb way over here this delay over there this synth behind this and what not.

It’s nice to have everything within arm reach. I really feel like it’s potential is limitless. The controlled randomness you can get from them is also amazing. It’s almost like someone else is playing with you. I mean I can go on for a while.

But all this to say if your thinking about it go for it. Have never been so pleased with a gear purchase and I’m super excited to expand on it check by check.

And as far as samplers go, i think there’s nothing like it. Though I thought the octatrack was easily the most powerful sampler out when I bought it, I sold it and have no regrets. My bitbox can record hours worth of samples and has a crazy powerful looper. And I always feel like external effects are better than built in effects. just got a recorder module too that can record for however long. So I just record pretty my whole session anytime I turn it on now. Never been able to do this so seamlessly without using a computer.

This went way longer than expected but this is my first rant I posted here and would like to share .

Also too i know it’s not about the gear you have, it’s about the music you make. And none of this stuff is necessary and limitations spark a lot of creatively yea. But we all lurk these forums for a reason, I think we’re all looking for that perfect setup. And I feel like I’m closer than ever to it <3
