In spirit it’s remarkably close to a 404. Some things are better some not - but as a 404 guy I’m feeling very comfortable with it, where as much as I’ve always tried to love modern MPCs (because they’re objectively great) they are just too much. I’m a basic-ass hip-hop guy so simple machines click with me - and you can dial in some nice lofi vibes on the MPC Sample.
Off topic but seeing so much chatter about Koala again forced me to finally give it a go on my phone. Id bought both upgrades within 20 minutes what a great bit of kit!! I can see why there’s so much demand for a hardware version it’s in many ways my perfect sampler - and I can use it with one hand while a try to keep my baby from screaming my ear off.
If it’s in an MPC Studio–like form factor, that’s already portable enough for me. Battery power just adds flexibility, since I sometimes like working on the couch (the EP-133 is great for that - would be nice to replace that role as well).
For more sample-based tracks (e.g. vinyl), I don’t always need the full synth setup after capturing the samples. I already do this with the EP-133, hook it up, sequence a few synths, capture loops, then unplug and finish arranging elsewhere, like on the balcony.
Other times, when I’m sequencing and tweaking multiple synths live, the “brain” stays connected.
Battery isn’t essential, but it would be a nice option for traveling. Imho, a modern MPC 1000-style portable device with a JJOS-like workflow, battery power, and good I/O for an analog setup should be totally doable today.
Have you tried syncing between Koala and Sampler to throw samples back and forth to mangle?. I’m a basic hip hop guy too, so the Sample workflow and hands on approach has very much peaked my interest after exhausting trying every modern MPC except for Live 3. However, I agree Koala workflow is just perfect. I know you can use midi controllers but I really want a hardware version of it really.
i dont know if kits are used differently on other MPCs but the Sample does have a kind of kit functionality. on the project load screen you can choose to only load the kit from a project rather than the whole project with the kit and sequences
Apparently, Ableton Move is another device immune from the Elektron First campaign and anti pop’n gear thread diversity initiatives. I guess only Akai is sanctioned.
This *(new MPC device thread ban) is lame af and souring my opinion of the forum overall.
To be clear, this isn’t about ruining or eliminating another thread. It’s just about letting a completely different new device, Sample, have its own thread.
Yes, a separation between the regular MPC OS devices and the MPC Sample is strongly needed! Some non-Elektron devices even have seperate MK1 / MK2 threads…
Actually I don’t think it is myself and I’m mostly in agreement that the sample is it own thing and should imho have a dedicated users thread to ensure folks that want info specifically about sample have a space to share their knowledge etc. it’s pretty clear that it’s not really a modern mpc to anyone that’s followed the conversation or videos that outline the workflow and peculiarities of it… also I agree with the sentiment posted earlier by someone that new live or XL user will now have more trouble searching the existing mpc thread for the stuff they’re wanting to find out…
Let alone not being able to carry out a discussion about said devices without it becoming a jumbled mess. I think at the very least, a “MPC Sample Users” should be allowed for the simple reason that this device demands quite a unique workflow from the others that will evolve even more over time.
I do think with the stark difference of the samples vs the flagships and difficulty searching this thread warrants separate discussions. Made this thread confusing and it’s a shame.
Not to mention I’m selfish since I will probably get a newer flagship MPC down the road and this was such a valuable resource!
