Its a new maschine, called “TALENT”. It will be released in the 1.80 version, Alechko as a Beta tester and was running it for few years already. Even before 1.70 release, go figure.

thanks! I think it is sounds different from other machines too, the whole signal chain has a lot to do with it and that’s why I try get everything I can from the main outs and not skip the internal modules, the master distortion, the comp, the fx pushed into it, it just has it’s own sound…
and the fact you can bring in samples is next level fun!

well, here it’s basically slides combined with filter movement (lfo cutoff+manual envelope depth). and to hit those unexpected sounds I use live recording of parameters a lot.

recipe for another nights of space pings:

  1. lowpass 24 at 0, resonance around 80
  2. 16 trigs (or how much you want)
  3. live record note length to create random lengths
  4. amp hold auto, decay short, add some reverb/delay
  5. map one perf to cutoff fully open, another perf to resonance to reach max value so +47, another perf to add more reverb and delay, you can add more perf macros to control the fx like reverb eq or delay feedback/time
  6. trigs probability on 25% and stay on the page to play with the condition
  7. press play and start playing with the performance macros
  8. adjust the master distortion/comp for extra crunch

if you put impulse as a machine you’ll get better pings though, add some lfo movement to the cutoff too

Awesome. Now set the pattern length to something weird like 5/16, 7/16, 13/16 for that Buchla feel. And use the exponential LFO mapped to filter with a very very slight depth to get a bell sound.

Now copy the track sound and trigs to another track. Pan one left the other right. Slightly change the pitch of one by changing the filter cuttoff. If both are mapped similarly to the same PERF, then changing one will change both.

When os 1.70 arrived, I sold my Rytm (I had been using for 3 years religiously) to fund an Isla s2400.

Even though 1.70 added a lot of stuff, it frustrated me that it hardly did anything to improve my samplebased hiphop workflow, except for the increased resolution on samplestart/end, and elektron basically stated that nothing more would be added because of hardware limitations.

Now over a year later I got another Rytm! I figured I missed the sound and workflow so much that I just had to get it back into my studio. Turning it on again felt like coming home.

Any tips for cool 1.70 stuff I should try out now that you guys have been using it for a while?

sampler part pretty much stayed the same, a great additions in general that melodic samples benefit from is the slew on random lfo, binding it to tune/fine reeeealy make it tape like movement, the euclidean generator can help with generating rhythms faster but personally I don’t use it so much, if that had velocity controls per pulse I’d be using it more. also the sample start/end are high res now, no need to use velocity mods anymore! the scales also great.

the tuning of the analog voices is much better, if you want layering then it’s easier then ever imo

oh and btw, I think you’re gonna really enjoy the new acoustic bd/sd, and the sy chip oscillators are fire

Easy easy tip, but really kinda bread and butter awesome:

Auto Chord Progression
Prereq: A long sample with no percussion and slow chord changes
Set your long sample on a pad, silence the synth. I usually use LT cause it won’t get cut off. Put your long sample on there with a long decay on the AMP. Set your LFO to modulate the start of the sample. Set the sample start to the middle of your long sample. Set the depth to like 30. Then just hit the sample whenever you want a chord change. I don’t know what I’m doing with chord progressions anyway, I let the LFO decide.

Here we have the lovely string intro to Sailing, unironically one of my favorite songs from my childhood. The LFO is just choosing the start point as the strings go through their progressions.

It really takes me away to where I always heard it could be. Just the dream and a sample to carry me, soon I will be free.

How is your Isla s2400 journey so far. I’ve been eyeing that for a while but I was worried I would miss the elektron workflow and specifically the Rytm sound. I’m usually into the stuff that I make on the Rytm, so despite not being able to slice, I just can’t really part with it.

I thought I would share come recent hip hop beats from the Rytm, recorded into a TX-6. These are mostly sample based with some low end help from the analog synths.

These sound amazing man! Love your sound.

I’ve used the s2400 for a little over a year, and I’ve made more music than ever in that period. I did miss the Rytm a lot though. Here’s a comparison of each ones’ strengths:

S2400:

  • Amazing to chop samples, it automatically divides samples into 8 slices in a mute group per track if you go into multimode, meaning that you can load a drumbreak and its chopped immediately. Changing samplestart/endpoints is a breeze as well.
  • Very flexible sound, it can go from clean to the sp1200 aliasing and something in between. Its very easy to mix, everything you put in sounds great.
  • You get 8 very flexible loopers, which can also be used to set up an fx loop using ext fx.
  • Some great modern features like 8 track usb recording (without a plugin like overbridge), sd card streaming.
  • Built like a tank, nice pads, looks good.
  • Stereo!

Rytm:

  • The best sequencer ever. The s2400 is alright, but the Rytm sequencer is magic. It just feels so hands on and alive…
  • Analog drum sounds, and way more sound shaping features (also for samples). The Rytm feels like you could experiment endlessly.
  • Good build quality, Looks amazing, very well designed.
  • The Rytm sound is less flexible but has way more character than the S2400. Everything sounds massive, but hard to tame.

It feels like both machines excel at different parts of the musicmaking proces. On the S2400 its very inspiring to just record some samples and chop them up. Layer some more samples and the track is done. Less is more.

On the Rytm there’s a slower start and thinge take more time, but you can keep on finetuning, performing and experimenting for ages.

I think you should stick to the Rytm as it matches your style perfectly. Maybe try to use a little sampler on the side (koala of sp404?) in tandem with the Rytm.
