Tempera: a granular instrument

I can try to make a “simple” tutorial from scratch, even if simplicity isn’t my main quality.

A rythmical and a melodic example? There are many approaches possible depending on what you want to make with a granular…groovebox ! : D

Tempera was designed in a 2 dimensional way, but with Poly Aftertouch it became 3 dimensional !

I was just fooling on a blank canvas (thanks!) with a beat and a bell. Didnt hear sound at first till i left the keyboard notes on ‘ongoing’ and pbby the emitters were too short… anyway, now i have the sounds… the beat (my sample) contains the bpm in the name but detect fction didnt work so i updated myself… but still the beat sound doesnt play ‘as original’ like in the demoes when you scroll the vertical line… so here i am, next step(i am travelling) is to sort this out, it’s pbbly an emitter fooling that beat, master tempo is slightly different than my sample but i understood it stretched once you edit properly sample bpm. Need to recheck manual there and there of course.
You know, some people like James Orvis did small free tutos for elektron, excellent ones, and i was happy to pay for extended/compiled ones even though i didnt use them… dont hesitate to proceed that way if it saves lots of time for the upcomng user which im sure are going to be numerous

Thanks again for the support, i have billions of questions but most will find their answers in the learning process…

Matt

Ok thanks @ezoray, standalone or with hardware midi only in my case!

Good start ! Tempera can be basically considered as an Octatrack with 8 vertical tracks, sliced in 8 cells.

I tried your app… and I admit I don’t understand how it works.

Some feedbacks after fiddling with different things:

  • Play starts then stops almost immediately.
  • Random and BPM values are super extreme (I don’t think anyone will run a 968bpm song  ) It doesn’t help getting “normal” values.
  • After using Random, Delete deletes everything (no use since there’s a Delete All)
  • Not sure if that’s doable but I was disturbed by the fact I can add an emitter clicking on a cell but I can’t delete it clicking on the same cell.
  • An emitter added is added on the device grid
  • It would be nice to have a colour or any change indicator when switching from Emitter to Notes and CC.
  • Could not find how to enter Notes or CC
  • I just noticed the arrows in bottom left as I was about to close the app. Since they are necessary to use the functions above, I think they could be more remarkable.
  • I’d call Append “MIDI file”
  • I didn’t understand what Start / Prev / Next / End are for. Kind of sequencing?
  • Maybe a rudimental Manual would be welcome

Can’t really say more since Play function stopped
Maybe I’d need to set correct MIDI channels for the app to work correctly but I did not find where to do so.

You could get more feedbacks if you present your app on the Tempera Discord (if you haven’t yet).

PS: I’m on MacOS Monterey

Hey, thanks for it checking out. Going through what you found:

That’s likely due to being on the final frame, you’ll need to go back to the starting frame, or any frame you choose to start on. It’s this way as you can start play from anywhere and it will return (hitting stop twice) to the start frame, or if looping loop back to it.

Yeah that is pretty high, it used to be 2000bpm. It’s this way as the app was originally just for creating animation and it can still be used that way. Random goes up to 64, the size of the Tempera’s 8x8 grid.

It will if you’re only working with a single frame, you can have many frames as you like. Each frame contains its own grid. If the display is showing Frame 1 / 1 you’re only working with a single frame.

Right click will remove the emitter from the cell. If you’re using a trackpad you may need to hold down ctrl while simulating right click.

This is intentional, you can add a emitter any time, including during playback, and it will be sent to the Tempera.

Ah yeah those buttons are only placeholders, I’m on the fence on whether its worthwhile to add those as well?

I know that’s not great. The layout was set before I added the transforms so they’re a bit shoehorned in there. I have placed their keyboard shortcuts and others close together for convenience, and you can rebind them if need be.

Append will load the file at the end of the existing frames, Load will replace them.

Yes they’re there to help you navigate through frames, but:

was the user guide pdf not included? That would be making life very awkward for you. Let me check the downloads.

At the moment it uses channel 1 and it’s not configurable right now.

I did post there but it’s quickly lost in the conversation, I have added it to the gallery.

Many thanks for the feedback.

TemperaMental_User_Guide.pdf (12.5 KB)
The pdf looks to be included, at least in the latest downloads. If you don’t have it I’ve attached it here.

I didn’t understand there was a system of frames. Yet, Frame 1/1, I press Play, it stops. I dunno what to do with it and it seems crucial.

Mmmh not sure of the advantage to install an app to get a lightshow if it complicates life of people who would like to use the app for music

It works, pretty convoluted instead of a simple click but it works.

Sorry I made a mistake, I meant it is NOT shown on the device.

I don’t understand. Does that mean you can’t add notes or CC with the app?

Indeed, I didn’t get the PDF with the download, that explains my struggling  Thanks for uploading it here as well!

That’s a pity because I think most users use their own configuration due to their other devices. I personally won’t change my MIDI config just to use an app to the risk I put a mess if I forget to rechange it after.

Yeah I know, Discord is not the best place IMHO to get things organized. One person fork the Tempera room/thread though so you can get to the conversation of his program called TCM right away. Nice program that got improved recently in order to prepare samples for Tempera btw.

Play is just for the sequencer, not much will happen if there is only a single frame. It won’t actually send a single frame because as you draw emitters on the grid they should already appear on the Tempera and only when emitters have changed will they be sent.

Ha yes it is trying to cover both bases, but there shouldn’t be much complication, it just means the slider is less granular than it would be with a lower limit.

Sorry I should clarify for the trackpad. For how I have the Macbook trackpad settings (I’m not sure how default they are), 1 finger touch to place the emitter, 2 finger touch to remove. To drag remove is when you hold down the ctrl button.

That’s strange, is the Tempera the selected device?

No not right now, it’s a fair bit of work so it’s something that needs to be justified to see if it would be worthwhile.

That’s a fair point, and each emitter can respond to a different channel as well. If the app gets any traction I’m happy to expand upon it. I’ve pretty much added as much as I can fit in at this point and would need to re-architect parts of it to make additions going forward.

Yep.

Could you clarify what’s the purpose of the app?

I sent you a PM

Although the auto prompt to send a PM actually posted a new thread.

I just got Tempera two days ago, such a joy exploring this thing.
Is there any ETA for the next firmware? I’m really looking forward for the envelope follower modulator, since I thought that it was already there in 2.2.

Check out the Discord, you’ll find all betas firmwares there

The beta is very stable for me ( v2.3-rc7) and you can download on Discord and play

It should be final release soon, RC 7 is a new one! the bugs people are finding now are pretty deep, its very well tested by the user base!

Did you ever get the app working, as I may have answered a couple of your concerns in the latest version: https://github.com/ezoray/temperamental/releases/latest

I need to give it another try but I won’t be in touch with my Tempera for a while as I’m on the road.
