Teenage Engineering Sampler 'Medieval'

You refer to OP-1 having a destructive workflow I guess. That is one of the main ingredients and part of the success. People get things done. Well, some don’t and blame the blacksmith

I asked them a question shortly after beginning of the Renaissance - why they didn’t include just AA(A) batteries (eneloops …) in OP-1 OG if they care so much about environment that they claim the cardboard box (…). They responded friendly and sincere. I forgot the answer, because not convinced, bought the OP-1 reissue a decade later despite my concerns about future proofness (that a word?) for about 1.8x the price and was happy because of workflow and results.

Maybe a single encounter, lucky day, etc. I heard they were snobby to everyone else

alrighty folks, played around with mine for the afternoon and got these three beats out of the stock samples. i sampled in an extra kick, snare, and sub. the samples are fun! ill share some initial thoughts down below

everything was ran through the sp404mk2 for crashes and boomshaka’s

this first one is ep-1320 solo

this one i sampled some chords onto the ep133 and resampled them back to the 1320 to save some voices

this one is all ep1320, the first half sucked so i just cut it out. tried to do a medievally one

i had an interesting first experience because i was sitting in a very sunny location outside with sunglasses on, so i really couldnt see the screen at all. i could just make out the numbers, i think they are harder to see outside since they are red. but i maneuvered through with no problem, everything is more or less identical to the ep133.

one thing that is different involves the screen, they dont have the parameter wheels that you have on the ep133 to see an approximation of the parameter value. the big picture of the dude on his 1320 takes that place and is always on lol. i actually thought that maybe there was a bug or something considering the section where the wheel used to be is dark most of the time. now there is one little target icon that lights up when you are in the center of the parameter values. this makes it a less easy to set those parameters visually, gotta use your ears more. an example where this is kind of annoying is when im trying to change the levels of multiple samples, i could see if their parameter wheels were all lit the same amount fairly easily. gotta do it by ear now.

also, its easier to see the level indicator in bright light, i can never see when the third or fourth segment light up on the ep133 when im outside, but on the ep1320 there are identically colored ovals at the top of each segment which makes it way easier to see outside.

some of the instruments (10 i think) are in fact multisampled, and funny enough, they loop. i wouldnt be too surprised if multisampling and sample looping come to the ep133 in an update soon, but DISCLAIMER: maybe not, idk. it seems like the multisampling isnt a sample-per-note, it almost seems like its only two samples? maybe three? (EDIT: downloaded the multisamples off the device and put the wav in audacity, the multisamples start with one note that is played during one shot mode, followed by 7 different samples between two octaves) being pitched around at certain splitting points.

kind of a downside that i anticipated is the multisampled instruments are in stereo, so they hog a bunch of the voices. i sampled some chords onto the ep133 in mono and back onto the 1320 to save on the voice limit. this worked nicely, can use the effects to restereoize them. which leads me to the next downside for me

the new effects arent that interesting to me. the dimension expander doesnt do a whole lot for me, i need to try it out with different sounds at different settings to get a better idea. the ensemble is alright, its more pan-focused than the chorus on the ep133. once again, will have to experiment further. the echo is cool, i will probably use that some more. i didnt try the reverb yet, i assume the others are the same as the ep133.

the new punch in effect is whatever, ill likely never use it. its just a warbly effect that i already achieve with the 404.

the demo songs are definitely longer than one scene and they do in fact play automatically. either TE is teasing all the most requested features or they are being the most dickish they can be, i just dont know.

oh, the knobs go on the pots super easily now, but its still a tight fit on the fader, im just gonna do what i did with my ep133 and use some different pieces.

the color isnt so smoker’s lounge yellow in person, its almost like a dark but soft mint green. still not much of a looker tho lol

like pretty much touching them with my nose, i was hoping it wouldnt be super pungent and the smell is pleasant to me

this close

and thank you! i have wondered what people in the ancient past would think of my music, i wonder if they would even be capable of hearing things that fast. the world will never know

lol amazing

The more I see and hear from this machine, the more I kinda want it.. it’d be so hilariously incongruous to make super precise Autechre style IDM on it.

Cool tracks!

Can you make your own multi-samples or how does that work?

Also: have you had a go with the arpeggiator yet That’s the new feature i’m most curious about.

damn wth man how does this thing have an arp that my dt2 probably never will :sob:

thank you!

i dont think you can make your own multisamples, im wondering if this will be added to the sample tool or something down the line. seems like it could be possible to do it on the device itself with some clever integration but i dont know. i am imagining a little place in the sample tool where you can upload two or three samples to combine into a multisample, would be fun!

the arp is really basic, it just plays the notes in the order pressed on repeat. i probably wont use it, i find it more fun just playing arps in on the pads.

Your tracks remind me of the jet set radio future soundtrack. That was the last thing I expected from a medieval themed sampler

my friend had that soundtrack on CD and we used to bump it all the time as kids hell yeah thank you!

This is exactly how I would have expected it to implemented. Does it only work in keys mode or can you use it to trigger different drums?

should smell like pestilence!

How dare they say its the worlds first Medieval electronic instrument!
That honour goes to the Synth axe!

After fadergate, will this one come in a box that actually protects the unit, or will it be packed with vintage straw?
