in this setup, I don’t use (or I use very sporadically) the Behringer Neutron and the TD3. The ones I always use are the RD9, the Digitakt (where I have several of my samples and samples from several synthesizers/drum machines that I like and enjoy). I use the RD9 and the Digitakt for rhythms and the rest as melodies or leads I use the Roland SH01A, basically I process my sound from the RD9 in the Digitakt which is later processed in the Oto Boum before going to the Tascam Model 12. I use the Zoom MS-70CDR for the SH01A just plus delays on some tracks. I use a Strymon Timeline and Eventide Space in a chain as effects for the Tascam Model 12, this way I define which channels I want to apply effects to, and from the RD9 I use individual outputs like clap and hihat for the Tascam as well. The Roland Boutique TR08 only serves to send a signal to the Oto Boom. There may be a more logical solution, but I use the TR08 as the same signal in the sequencer as my RD9 kick signal. I do everything dawless, I only use a DAW to record. I record my songs on the machines themselves. Basically, I have room to easily solve the problem. The Behringer Neutron will be removed, as will the TD3, probably. That’s why I want to add an FM synthesizer, and both the Elektron Model Cycles and the Elektron Digitone come to mind. Thanks for all the answers, and I hope I was clear.
Hi @Nuno, if you’ve got the space and the cash then go for it!
Digitone is a lovely poly and would add a lot.
As far as doing it right - what I see I like, but only you can decide and this comes with using the gear and experience. Definitely a poly will help, it’s just space.
I can’t see your monitors, this could be an area to research too - but OG Digitone- the price is right.
It would not fit in my head
And I dont need so many voices
Slowly getting rid of all my stuff, very happy with only dt2, ah fx , intellijel Cascadia
But that is me
Seems like you should be able to wring a nice techno session out of what you have so it seems the question is about how you want to work. More elektron sequencing or not? More recall. If you get the DT you’ll find out and you can probably sell it for around the same you bought it for. Maybe you pass it on or maybe one of the other devices find a new user if you like the DT.
In this configuration, I don’t use the Behringer Neutron and I use the Behringer TD3 a little. The Roland TR08 only sends a signal to the sidechain input on OTO BOUM in the same sequencing as the RD9 kick.
My monitors are 2 JBL 305P MKII
The Digitone would add a lot to this set up and would make a great partner to the Digitakt. You could sequence all your drums from the DT and sequence all your synths from the DN. You could write all your tracks with those two controlling your entire setup in an organized and controlled manner.
digitone would be fun, and would add some sonic possibilities that you can’t quite get with the current gear. but it’s not needed, and that’s already quite a handful you’ve got. what’s that thing to the right of the korg sequencer?
This is a rucci minimal drone
I got an OG DN, a DT II, Analog Rytm 2 and an OG Analog Four being controlled by the DT. I have a few other synths controlled by the DN (Pro 3, Peak, Microfreak and BS2 with FX), but the Elektrons are the core of my setup. I love sampling beats from the Rytm into the DT through the Werp machine and messing wth it until I’ve got something completely new and nexpected going.
I like using the DN for rhythmic elements, sharp textures and frail melodies. The core of the setup, however, is the Rytm. I use it for foundational elements, including the powerful dual osc for my main bass; it compliments the deep kicks so well. Add claps/rimshots, sampled snare, a couple of well-crafted noise tracks and the fantastic ten osc hats and I know I have the basis for a strong track.
I have a bit of artistic/genre ADHD… or genre-consistency syndrome.
So for me, I have different pieces for different purposes… with units like the Digitakt II or MPC One being more like the “two rings to control them all”.
I can completely make 4-on-the-floor techno that dynamically moves around in a mix using half the gear on your table… so when I read your question, and see ot in context with the photo of uour setup, it’s clear that the acquisition of a Digitone is not a question need. You can totally make fantastic techno and IDM with the gear reflected in that photo.
However, maybe the Digitone offers a simplicity and expandability in terms of FM and more specifically, FM Grooveboxes that offers the sound diversity that you want!!
I was putzing with the Cross-FM engine in the Roland SH-4d and it opened my mind to how I can use FM to create metallic, chimey sounds… as well as glitchy scraping sounds… to more traditional continuous waveform type tones. There was a tonal palette with the Cross-FM engine that wasn’t previously available to me in a multi-track device.
I’m sure the Digitone II can dance circles around the SH-4d in terms of FM synthesis… nevermind that the Digitone II sports a robust 128 step sequencer… and song-mode too.
As far as space… I find I’m often changing up gear and putting unused gear off to the side, or in a closet. But if and when I ever do this shit live in a pub, basement, or other small underground venue, I’m really going to need to reduce the number of pieces I bring out.
So that’s where, maybe picking only a few diverse, multi-track grooveboxes might be best!! And a Digitone and Digitakt would be a powerful dynamic duo for and techno/electronic rig… and if you truly feel you need some analog synth in your setup, you’ve already got that covered!!
Do you ever use clips from films or other found-sound/plunderphonics in your techno? If so… what device do you use for that??
For me, I’m thinking the brains of a DAWless live setup would be a Digitakt II and MPC One. All synced via midi… and then I might slave a few pieces of gear like an SH-4d, a Cre8audio East Beast, Behringer Edge, maybe a Beetlecrab Tempera, and a Polyend Play… to cover just about all the bases I feel I need in order to make a diverse range of electronic music!!
Just my two schillings
