Tchu’s Musical Brain

Your voice? Or samples chopped from somewhere? Or recordings of people that sang for you?

Either way, inspired me to try using vocals.

Sometimes.

More often, this.

Sometimes.

Cool, I think you will like the process.

Listened to this on a walk this afternoon. Really wistful, slightly foreboding and hopeful all at once. It’s all incredible - lots of little details, plenty of groove and really good sound and arrangement decisions. What are the melodic elements in after All These Years, such as around 1:50? Is it a hang drum or something run through a bit of distortion? It’s a really lovely sound.

Wow, thank you @m0ld ! I really like reading how you felt the music and all the technical details you brought up, it motivates me. A BIG thank you for the support!:heart:

It’s really motivating to have such nice feedbacks from you Elektronauts!

I’ll have to check but it’s either the DN II or the ST.

I thought that the mix was very good, and it has a nice range of styles all within complimentary tones. I also found the work with vocal samples very tasteful and hypnotic.

Great work! Keep it up!

That’s good news, I’m working hard to have the best possible Live sound. Thank you @shigginpit for this!:heart:

That’s another area in which I work hard and try to bring original ideas and grooves. I’m really glad you brought that up!

Very enjoyable Tchu. Very precise, and lovely percussion design, especially the tuned percs throughout. Nice tasteful acid in places too. I’ll definitely be revisiting.

A BIG thank you for this great feedback @thejewk, I really appreciate it!:heart:

I like it when there’s specific things/points brought in.

Any favorite(s)?

Stick Around and the opening and closing pieces on first impression. The super tight drum hits in Stick Around hit just right, and the hats sound beautiful against the pinging arp sound.

This was the first Track I did with the Digitone II (flute, percs, arps, pads).

Thanks for answering about favorites!:heart:

How do you create from a workflow perspective? Does it happen often/rarely?

Mod edit: seems like someone is playing nasty petty games

First, I would like to welcome you to the best Electronic Music Community! You are now an Elektronaut and thanks for choosing Tchu’s Musical Brain thread as your first post, I’m honoured. I will try to answer the best I can.

AUDIO

I have everything connected in a Mixer (Bébé Chérie at this moment) except for my Sampler, the Digitakt II. The Mixer is going in the DT II for sampling and sidechaining duties. Then, the DT II is going in my hardware mastering chain (Polyend Press > Analog Heat +FX > BBE Sonic Maximiser > GAP Pre-amps).

MIDI

Everything is connected via 5-pin MIDI cables. The Digitone II (DN II) is controlling Sync, Transport, Program Changes and the MIDI for my other Synths. I’m using a Kenton MIDI Thru device for a tight sync.

HOW DO I CREATE

I usually start with a Tempo, a Scale and an idea. The idea could be : a new device to explore, a technic to learn, a Sound design perspective, a new Scale to learn, …

When I sit down in the Studio, I rarely have a Song in mind. Instead, the Sounds are guiding me through all the process. Each Track is composed of only one Pattern. I prefer having more Tracks for different sections than having to switch Patterns. When I have all the elements, I explore different combinations of sounds, rehearse and record on a single Stereo Track. So, all the Tracks you hear are Live performances (no edits, no post-processing). I use a DAW only for recording.

If I understand correctly your question, I do music almost everyday. It’s a must, I couldn’t live without it.

What? I’ve just spent 20 minutes replying to no one.

At least, it will be useful for one person, me.
