TAL Pha: Alpha Juno recreation

OK, he’s looking into it (iOS TAL Pha) but no guarantees at this point.
Pricing is an issue, the port is involved and you need to sell way more at iOS prices (obviously) to recoup the work compared to a VST. I know at least one person has said they’d pay the desktop price but I honestly doubt this opinion would be widespread - I could be wrong though.
People are beginning to expect full compatibility between the iOS and desktop versions and this is not trivial to achieve.
The UI would need quite a bit of work to be usable on a touch device, especially potentially a much smaller display touch device.
So, not out of the question and I will update when we know a bit more but, also, don’t necessarily count on it happening. Patrick is just one guy and has to be really careful where he spends his efforts and time.

Would love TAL Sampler and Drum on iOS, too!

Thanks for the update! Yeah I’m the one who’d pay desktop price for the iPad version, but most won’t.
The hope still lives. Meanwhile I’ll repair my AJ1.
I’ve added it to the list of AJ programmers, since as far as I understand it can double as one: roland alpha juno programmers part 1: software – alex was a shrimp

I think from previous conversations with Patrick about this it’s in the “no way, far too much work” basket, sadly.

“The creator says doing this would be gigantic amount of work and force them to assume a fair amount of personal risk.”

“Sounds great! I’ll take three!”

Is it any wonder developers don’t frequent here?

I wish to see a bundled price and I wanna see presets being compatible across platforms.
If that’s done right I’ll be less concerned about pricing. A company that makes this standard will get my money sooner and more of it that’s a guaranty 100%.

ah sure, so one price gives you the iOS and desktop versions? That makes sense to me. afaik the plan was to have compatibility between the two, yeah. Part of what makes it tricky.

I’m no developer but I’m guessing Apple isn’t making it easy for developers either.

I think I’ve just about made peace with the fact that iOS/iPadOS is never going to have a fair number of plugins that I wish it did. There are a variety of good, understandable reasons for this, and yes, Apple has its share of the responsibility.

There was an Eno quote I read recently where he talked about producers back in the 70s saying, “I can’t go into that studio if they don’t have a Phasertron 5000!” Eno’s approach was just to work with what was in the studio and not to hang anything on the absence of the newest gear.

I’m sure that anecdote won’t work for most people, but it (mostly) sunk in for me. Never hurts to ask the Phasertron 5000 dev to make an iPad version, but you can still do well with what’s already available.

yeah exactly that, spending the time on the development then dealing with that on top knowing that you have to sell a bunch of copies at 10 bucks each to even begin to cover that time, you can see why a lot of devs just don’t bother.

I do find it funny that Apple is crying about European Law with multiple stores while Apple hardly puts any effort in their own App Store. Categories are a complete joke in the App Store. You can’t find shit which must be extremely frustrating for the developers. Specially when Apple has so many demands.

What I hope for is that all developers get together and try to find a way to open a store specifically for music production. Apple already showed it doesn’t care much so why aren’t developers more united on this front? Take action!

There’s a lot of weird blame going round in a TAL-Pha thread. “Why won’t the developer make this for mobile?” “Why won’t developers take action?” “I wanna see, I wanna see…”

This is a one-person shop that’s made an awesome plug I, at least, think sounds amazing and have been having tons of fun with! True, it’s not available on every niche platform. But as has been pointed out, that has nothing to do with the developer and everything to do with the economics of a platform being niche.

Celebrate it for what it is, or accept it’s not for you and move on. Stop blaming creators for not meeting your personal needs.

I’m not sure that “wish it was on the iPad”, “Apple should make life easier for the devs” and “we should use the tools we already have” counts as blaming the developer.
And whether the iPad version comes to to fruition or not, it’s a plugin that recreates an awesome (and an underhyped) synth with great precision, something to celebrate even if it’s PC only. I love and praise any attention the AJ gets.

yeah I didn’t really take any of this as a criticism of the dev at all, just a few “hey this would be nice to have” comments, which I take positively and can feed back to discussions with Patrick (TAL). It’s great to know what people want because we can start to judge if it’s worth the effort to add a given feature, port to iOS or whatever.
In my experience the discussion here always seems very civil and constructive, which I really appreciate, considering how toxic a lot of the gear forums are.
Much love, Elektronauts!

as an Alpha Juno owner since 1988(ish?) one reason an ipad version would be useful to me is the app’s apparent ability to also function as basically a sysex librarian and programmer, if i understand others’ experience with the desktop version. not the end of the world if it doesn’t get ported but would probably be an easy buy for me if it ever were available with those same functions

Just like @emptyvessel we worked together with Patrick for many years. He’s a great guy and he’s truly passionate about and in crafting his products just right!

With regards to the sound. Well, we are so fortunate to own an Alpha Juno-2 and a good friend still has his Alpha Juno-1 where he made a lot of records with. When comparing we were both like, ‘What the…’

Here are some sounds we made with this and some things we like about it if it is ok to share:

and a short demo with loads of different styles here:

for you to enjoy!

I enjoyed this Starsky Carr review/comparison:

I love TAL. I probably use at least 2 of their plugins in every project.

I compared it the Redominator and it’s not even close…plus the TAL-PHA feature set and UI is much better and smoother for me.
