Synths and samplers that deserved a better fate

a shame really… because they do sound great.

Hahaha yip mine are all stand alone sitting at the foot of my case, no probs if you are not live and studio only…but running the power cable to it direct in your rack is not like being asked to cutt off your arm…? Its not rocket surgery to have them feed by thier own power suppy while in your rack…other than the cables looking like spaghetti coming from some point in your system…oh wait its modular…spaghetti is the theme…

I had an EX5R and although it sounded really good I think that what led to its demise was that when it was released the technology of floppy drives, SCSI and extremely limited internal memory (even arpeggio sequences had to be saved to disk) was old hat.

Novation mono station, they made the mistake of removing the acid filter on the bass station. Has not been updated for a long time even there are some acknowledged bugs ( eg. Sequencer does not send slides over midi) and probably will not recieve more updates.
It could have been a modern take on a Roland MC-202…

Some of us value portability, but yes, one could do that.

Think this applies to the entire A-series samplers. The storage (floppy/SCSI) options and speed was the major let down (also overly deep when rack mounted; much empty space inside). Feature wise, hard to beat and pretty quick to navigate/use.

Yeah, I have a Demora, but … Roland made them fairly good audio interfaces, too, but the USB connection is located on the back of the unit, rather than the front, so if you do rack them and want to use the audio interface, you need to snake a cable through.

Which, between that and the power requirements, is why I’ve never bothered to rack mine, which also means it’s severely underutilized, despite its pretty considerable utility.

Understandable !
I watched some videos, yes the Micron looks a bit complicated… Ergonomic is special in it.
Hope the little brother won’t like it so I can… Lol.

So cool of you.

Omg! Is this still available!?

“Why spend thousands of dollars on expensive instruments and music lessons !?”

Beamz! $19.95 + S/H :joy:

I missed this but you might want to look at the
Electra.One. I know I’m extremely late telling you this :joy:

https://electra.one/

Faderfox stuff is nice but the Electra One does full Sysex as well which opens up a lot of possibilities for synths or other equipment with full MIDI specs.

They are also in stock currently but I doubt for much longer.

Ensoniq SQ-80.

Somehow the ESQ-1 got way more love, but I’m glad to see ASM bringing back interest in polyphonic aftertouch, which has always been an overlooked, hell of a feature.

I’ll also add that it’s a travesty that the DSI Pro 2 never got issued as a desktop. Would have been an absolute beast in a Tempest sized box with a small one octave button keyboard.

Hell yea. If it weren’t for Umek’s late 90s drummy/squelchy techno, I wouldn’t have known about the power of the Pulse, or the SE-1.

Blofeld can do everything the rack attack does… it’s a great synth for drums sound design.

Thanks–actually have one from an earlier batch . I tried out the FF but yep, the lack of full sysex was an issue, so I sold it and got an Electra. TBH I haven’t really played with it much yet, and have considered selling it, but the renewed enthusiasm around here lately has encouraged me to give it another go…

Funny, someone just posted an SQ-80 for sale on my local Facebook. They want $500. It hadn’t crossed my mind to be interested (although the area where I live gets very few vintage synth offers), but maybe I should be…?

Haha, that’s kind of awesome! I have one on the way now finally.

great-sounding machine & looks to polarise but completely unfinished software. Like you’d be working away and then go to edit notes… and no, nothing there. What other machine features a ‘Blang’ button?

it was almost good, if only they’ve finished the firmware and took a few rough edges off the hardware.
theyd planned to do fm box and drum machine, i’m not surprised they havent surfaced.
