The Rytm has all of these features, and more, and you already like the sound. Get a mki and don’t load any samples on, if you’re against sampling to make your drums. Or load some samples on and have even more variety.
Future Retro XS, A4, MS-20.
I’m in a phase of using an MS-20 to make percussion sounds. It’s fun, and usable. I’d say it was a lot more limited for making drum sounds than the Rytm (which I also have).
Yep. You can build that in mirack on your ipad. 20bucks.
No brainer.
Has anybody mentioned the Vermona DRM1?
Full of knobs, brilliant sound, no sequencer.
Too expensive maybe?
The kicks are incredible! And it does a lot more besides.
This
Between the Volca Drum and Model Cycles you cover prolly 95% of all imaginable synthetic drum and percussion sounds … and you can get them both for under 500 euro/dollar… so it’s a no brainer . If you’d prefer getting a bit deeper into the sounddesign… a Korg Opsix will do just fine … just over 500 and it has keys .
Great choice! The MKIII’s can be got for a good price used - I’d want a MKIV if it were me but there seems to be no used market for them yet - so would be a more expensive option. Not a great deal of difference, the kick is better if I remember?
Another option of course is cutting out the middleman entirely Sound Packs | Elektron
I’ll echo those suggesting software but also the Volca Drum. You could spend a day or two sampling it: either intentionally designing certain sounds (there’s a great web editor by @OscillatorSink), or there’s a button combo to endlessly generate random sounds.
I quite like this similar idea of a fairly open format drum synthesiser and have been considering the AVP Ritmobox.
Any decent synth tbh. If you want small desktop footprint, plenty of knobs, and exquisite sound… Studio Electronics Boomstar. Pick your filter flavour. They have basically all the features you’ve mentioned and are incredible sounding mono synths for any purpose.
Definitely agree with the Volca Drum call. Fairly cheap if you find one used and the randomize function is perfect for this application.
Agree about the volca drum, it’s excellent.
Another great digital drum machine is the Erica Synths LXR-02.
For analogue the Vermona DRM1 is great.
Both are significantly more expensive than the volca though.
If you don’t mind a bit of Eurorack I highly recommend Quad Drum
It doesn’t have all of that, but the Erica Synths DB-01 is capable of a lot of percussion noises once you learn how to dial them in. Almost all functions are on the front panel in the form of a knob.
I believe Vince Clarke used the SCI Pro One to build entire tracks, so perhaps one of it’s offspring, such as the Behringer tabletop version or a used Dave Smith Mopho.
Edit: Arg - I saw someone recommended the Erica LXR-02. Perfect suggestion! I have one of those also and it’s pretty easy to learn.
Those are all synth (not using the samples feature) & of course it can get a lot wilder with all the options for filters, drives, Matrix etc
Many find the interface very quick to get around despite the matrix
I can strongly recommend the Novation Bass station 2 for this.
Not only is it a very capable synth with a very direct and hands on UI,
The afx-mode lets you make a different patch per key (25 of them) ro assemble a complete (glitchy) kit.
Combined with arp/seq and its strange rhythm functionality it turns this synth into a very interesting drum machine.
I’ve bought and sold many synths, but the bs2 has found its place in my small studio and isn’t goi g anywhere.
End of commercial break
The AFX mode looks really awesome!
It is! It can give all kinds of interesting pseudo-random results when you start tweaking the knobs when playing back an arp or sequence; for you’ll never know which notes exactly the tweaks land on, since you are editing the note that is currently playing back. simply reload the overlay to revert back to the original sounds: very elektron-like
That makes it ideal for sampling a slightly longer session of that and cutting out interesting loops.

The synth-user-interface itself lends it perfectly for dialing in interesting single hits in the moment, it is very sh-101 like in its operation. This one just has memory too, so you can save interesting patches you’ve made.
Only downside I can think of: no internal fx.
Moog DFAM?
