Syntakt Science Lab #10 SD Basic

I’ve had a bit of a go at this one and I’m definitely out-of-my-styllistic comfort zone. 8 instances of SD Basic and only a wee bit of FX track. Just a rough jam and so a lot of the tweaks and changes are a bit arbitrary but it was fun to do and it’s always good to try new things.

Really liking the results! I agree, the Syntakt is so much more versatile than I initially assumed it was!

Thank you so much for listening and taking the time to provide valuable feedback! I truly appreciate it and it always helps me improve my (sound design) skills!

About the snare: I am glad you’ve noticed the metallic sound of the snare! I noticed it’s barely noticeable because it’s volume is probably too low. I was working on this on headphones and did not listen to what it sounds like on my monitors before I’ve recorded the pattern on the TV. There are a few other variants of that snare on patterns 1-5 on the project file. The metallic sound is due to track 3, track 4 and 5 have got the transient(s), the body and the tail.

edit: just recorded all the snares going through patterns 1-6:

I noticed the quieter hihats on track 7 are too quiet and barely noticable and the bassline is too repetitive and sucks tbh

I feel the Syntakt has a sound that’s too boomy on most of the bassy sounds so I’ll oftentimes sacrifice the MM Filter for creating space using the EQ filter. I have used the FX filter at times too. Reading between the lines, we all want a third filter per track, right ;p

Quick one, running through 13 patterns, but half are variations, so really 6.5 patterns

FX track is maxed, but the tracks were turned way down, so the Drive on FX acts more as subtle saturation.

There’s some interesting sounds that everyone else also tapped into.

here’s a variation of my earlier SD BASIC pattern with a different bassline and using a different snare.

Man! I really like that! What a fun bounce!

Some fun new entries here!

@Oxenholme I really like that breathy pipe sound.
@jeye_musik I like that style  Clean minimal. Nice combo of dry sounds and reverb-drained melodies.
@sdkboi You’ve done some deep diving! That snare sounds like physical modelling, with lots of careful details. I think you’re getting hang of the bass texture as well, nicely deep and aggressive.
@elxsound Nice abstract ambiences, like a dark tribal thing.
@PentalagusMusic Thanks!

I’ve been digging in the dirt. Here’s a deep spacey cave techno thing. Lots of stuff going on with p-locks and FX track filtering and drive. I found a nice area with some ring mod like sounds. There’s a lot happening on the Inharmonic parameter.

All eight tracks in use. 6-7 patterns. Sorry for the long recording. Listening to it now I could have increased the tempo a bit. Oh well.

5 minutes is a good length imo. Tempo feels right too. Great sounds!

This is giving me ‘Casino vs Japan’ vibes, would like to have heard the slower version :grinning:

Love this!! Great foundation to play some of the analogue tracks over.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it!

BTW since I do not want to embezzle that bass line’s inspiration, here’s a link to DJ Krust’s Warhead on YT

Thanks! I hadn’t heard of them, so now I have some research to do

I’ve also been using these SSLs as the starter for reworking tracks from an EP I finished but never released. My early experiments weren’t fitting stylistically so I’ve taken that pattern and sounds, changed the tempo, re-jigged the melodies to fit in with the song I’m re-working and then did a wee bit of tweaking of sounds. 8 instances of SD-Basic again. I’m probably at risk of over-using the ‘big reverb into FX track notch filter’ on these tracks but I’m having fun with it. The mix is possibly a bit rough due to being done on headphones but hopefully listenable.

Here’s the last SD Basic track from me. A low key shuffle. Exploring some gritty beats with a blippy reverb-drenched melody on top.

New lab up tomorrow!

Amazing stuff overall. Would be nice to have Digitone 2 Science Lab like this one.

That would be awesome. I don’t have a Digitone 2 but someone else should pick up on it.

It’s easy to set up, and doesn’t require much of your time. The most critical factor is getting enough people to participate over time. Without participants it will die quickly. I feel super lucky here, having this little gang of eager, skilled and positive people participating

I’ve been dragging but I finally put a thing together today.

Kind of sounds like some 90’s soft-core VHS tape I found stashed away.
I can really hear the FM qualities in this machine at times.

Ironically, I’m least fond of my snare sound here!
In this pattern the bassy tone is 48 steps to get it rotating around the rest of the pattern if that makes sense.
All but the kick and snare are going through the FX block notched filter with an LFO slowly wiggling the frequency.
Near the end I was just doing some TRACK ALL moving on the rhythm.

First entry from me in this one.

It’s very basic, but also not really, 5 tracks of SD basic, all very wet with verb and the verb is going to FX track.

FX track has probability trigs and locked params on the verb so it kind of randomizes the tails, I do this trick very often.

Rest is ctrl-all action for some variation, along with filter cutoff, harmony param and tune.

Inspired by some crazy clicky industrial music instagram reels I’ve been getting lately in my feed

Aaand one more.

This time all the tracks (except the melodic one) go through the FX track and I’m tweaking ctrl-all.

The melodic I first just bash the «keyboard» and it almost sounds like chords with the long verb tail.

Ooof, that first one is superb. Such a strong vibe. I love the shift between the muted, dark parts and the more open parts.

The next one is great too. That melody sounds like a sample at first  How did you do that? Is there some high frequency FM?

Thanks, it´s quite a simple sound actually, not even lfo action. I think the reason it sounds different is because I play it live and it “strumming”. Here´s my project!
