Syncussion SY-1 from Behringer

kewl! that would be nice. I’ll test, too

absolutely … it’s only a matter of time before i get one - that demo sells me on its core sound being truly stellar - i’m not even much a fan of pitch enveloped sounds, but even that sounds delicious on the syncussion

Syncussion/Beecussion is pretty much all sweetspots.

Just played around with it. Mute is cv over both voices’ decay times (0 volts=min decay), but as it’s controlling both voices, I prefer midi cc.

Yeah, having the option to control them individually via MIDI is cool. But the MIDI to Pitch feature (mode2) allows to play the brosync in 5 full octaves + a minor third instead of only one octave I have with my SY0.5 (!)

So it’s cool, to be able to still control both decays together with modular AND have a huge Octave range via MIDI. Pretty neat. Use your fingers for the rest

I actually like the sparse midi and cv control on the Beecussion. It encourages sampling and for saving presets I can snap a picture. So no need to control everything’s with midi or cv, I can mess with the sliders and if I want to go back to something I had earlier to record it, I look at the photo I took.
Not a fan of the fixed midi channel on voice 2 (one channel up), but I work around that by triggering voice 2 with a gate sequencer. Beecussion has dynamic gates, so varying voltage gives you velocity which you can’t have with midi, for some reason…
Combining midi with cv let’s you get the best of both worlds so to speak.

Huh? I’m pretty sure the SY0.5 has a 5 octave range or what do you mean?

Funny, had the exact same thought. Just sounds like the electronic sounds I was always searching for when starting with synths. I have enough machines though and it’s too big for what it does, but if I did live shows with lots of tweaking, I would definitely take a pretty close look at this.

ok, I was wrong. but not totally

SY0.5 description
CV tracking is calibrated over 3 octaves

Ah, ok. 3 octaves is ok, I guess. Seems similar to what I get on my Beecussion, but maybe it needs a bit more warm up time.
But hey, as long as it’s not audibly drifting apart, that’s good enough for an analog percussion synth.

From C5 to C3 mine stays within 0,8 - 1,2 cents, dropping to around 5 cents in the lower octaves. C6 is around 12 cents off, C7 already more than 45 cents. From C7 it sounds a bit whacked, but overall that’s ok imho.

I wanted to get an SY0.5. It has cv over filter and osc mode, that’s pretty useful, but then I saw that Beecussions were stocked at Thomann and I decided to try one. Overall I’m pretty happy with it. I’m a sucker for Syncussion basslines and having two voices means I can have one dedicated to bassline duties while the other one is free to do leads or perc sounds.
Syncussion basslines are gorgeous! But also the lead and perc sounds are nice and really shine through a reverb and/or other fx.

People were talking about some problems with pitch on the modwiggler forum, so I honestly never really bothered and only made bleeps n’ bloops with the SY0.5

Maybe I should sit down and calibrate the module. Thanks for sharing your measurements

I wonder if Syncussion type sounds can be reproduced by the DN2 FM Drum? They sound simple but I can’t quite put my finger on what makes it sound unique

They are pretty simple and I’ve come close with my Analog Keys, but something was always missing.
Syncussion has a certain sound to it, almost soft in a way. If you want to try your luck, the second oscillator is fixed (edit, no, it’s probably not fixed, sorry for the confusion). So you need a triangle wave oscillator, fm modulated by another triangle osc/lfo at 450 hz when the carrier is playing 440 hz.

Yep, according to this post, that is correct

Here’s a description of the different modes:

The wave frequency, variation range, and noise of the 2 osciIIIators are pre-set.
A: One oscillator sound, at this position the regular drum synthesizer sweep can be effected.
B. Sound of one oscillator adjusting the other osciIIator frequency; produces a metallic sound.
C. Sound of a mix of two oscillator outputs; sound is similar to that of a vibraphone.
D. Sound of mix of two oscillator outputs; produces a low to high sweep and is done by hitting pad softly or hard; there is no connection to SWEEP SPEED and SWEEP RANGE
E. Sound of one oscillator adjusting the other oscillator frequency with a mix of noise; produces a sound similar to hitting thin metal. F. Sound of only noise.

The mode switching by cv is the golden reason to buy the 0.5.

its fun, definitely. but I’ve come to a point where I wanted to exactly switch from one to a specific other mode. and then it can get a bit complicated. I can do that with my nerdseq, but I honestly wished for some better manual switches. I should try with some offset pot, cause the buttons on the sy0.5 are not really for jamming

these switching knobs look playable and also remind me of the vco range knob of the sh-101. that I used while playing to make nice, jumping melodies

Thanks! To clarify for anyone reading from the future: the 2nd oscillator isn’t fixed but it’s relative tuning to OSC1 is OK I’m not so sure anymore

Went digging a bit, some resources I found containing more details:

In the link I posted above the user wrote “This is to get the original fm ratio between VCO1 and VCO2.”
Ratio would indicate it’s not fixed and I think this is also how I approached it when I tried to get some Syncussion sounds out of my AK.

A fixed oscillator would mean it would go out of tune quickly when playing different notes.
I’ll try to get clarification from one of the clone builders. If I see him on Discord…
Sorry for the confusion, but I’m fairly certain it’s not a fixed oscillator. You can still use the calibration process described in the post I linked to as a starting point.

Starsky has got one so I expect a review soonish. I never really paid attention to this behringer project but thought it was interesting that it’s 1x midi in but full duplex I/O (one set per ‘side’) compared to the original and MSW etc.

I’m curious what others thin about the Syncussion vs the Edge/DFAM. Is there enough of a difference to warrant having both? The videos I’ve watched suggest yes, but maybe that’s not the case. Thoughts? Thanks, y’all!

I’d say they are quite different! Dfam being more about how the sequencer interacts with the synth voice and you can explore a lot of subtle changes and how they affect the sound while the Syncussion is more like a sweet spot synth. You can’t really dial in anything that doesn’t sound Syncussion-nice.
Also on the Dfam you have much more control over the fm. Waveform and fm modulator are fixed in the Syncussion, you only get the six modes you can select.

Edit: typo
