Hey guys! So I’m looking for something so incredibly simple, but I’m having trouble finding what I need. I know it exists.
My main brain in my setup is my Digitakt, which I’m using for most of my sounds. In the pursuit of keeping it simple, I’d like to play my live keyboard leads outside of the Digitakt so they can go into their own amp.
I am basically looking for a standalone hardware sound module into which I can load my own samples I’ve created on the Digitakt and elsewhere (preferably DAWlessly) and control with a MIDI controller. I don’t need it to have a sequencer, sound editor, effects, espresso machine, or anything else besides being solely a MIDI controllable sound module.
Also note that I am new to this type of gear, but aren’t simple keyboards with built in sampling capability a very common thing? Can’t find much that isn’t too much. Buying another synth or sequencer that could accomplish this task is just overkill for what I need.
Preferably something that doesn’t require an archaeology degree, but I realize with something this primitive, vintage might the move. And yes, I also realize that this would be very simple in Ableton Live but I’m trying to stay DAWless until I have no choice.
I think I would also take look at the 1010 Tangerine. I haven’t used one yet, but, it seems perfect for loading up a bunch of samples and playing them back, and it is very small. 1010 also make the battery case, so that could good for portability.
This 1010 stuff looks like what I need! A diy project could be fun as well. Thanks guys! Either of you know how the build quality/materials are on the 1010 stuff? It’s small enough to protect for sure, but I always like to tour with the tough stuff. I live near Chicago Music Exchange, which is a gear mecca. I think I’ll go see if they have one I can demo!
Oh man, the sampler box is EXACTLY what I need. Thanks for the recommendation. Absolutely grabbing one!
I’m a stage carpenter and fabricator by trade so I think I’m going to build it into like a 3ft x 1ft x 6in rectangular aluminum box for the express purpose of when people ask what it is I’ll just act really nervous and say I don’t know where the sounds come from and I don’t want to talk about it.
Blackbox is in a Metal chassis and the Tangerine is plastic but very sturdy. Tangerine with the battery case will keep it safe and protected for tour. Many Blackboxes have toured with many artists over the years too. Rest assured, either option can handle touring.
I’ve got a 1TB sd card in my Tangerine that mirrors the majority of my sample collection. It’s really handy to have something that small that can playback my entire collection via MIDI. I also use it to pick samples I want to record into other devices like OP-XY or OP-1 Field.
I’ve checked those OP-1Fs out. They seem very sick but it’s still just too much machine for what I need at the moment. The more I look into this DIY SamplerBox build the more I want to throw one together.
