Subvert is live

Finally, the co-op alternative to Bandcamp is here. Imagine it is Bandcamp Friday every single day, only without all the annoying emails.

The platform is now live and open to the public here:
https://subvert.fm

and my subvert page is now live!

Label functionality is in the works so you can bet I’ll be making a page for Ingrown Records and my other projects as soon as I can. Looking forward to the future of the platform! Hope to see you on there.

i made an account and well, only stripe possible, and required even if i want to give my music for free. In my country, stripe require a business ID which is an insane amount of administrative bullshit… i know it is the same with bandcamp now, but my acount still running with my paypal, and anyway nobody is gonna pay for my music, it sucks i can’t just post it and share.

So this is a new “bandcamp”?

Lol, same for me. Not that is a lot of burden to create a one-person “business”, but it makes no sense for that hypothetical 10 euros per year.

Yes, it’s quite inconvenient. I really don’t want another account on another financial app, specially when I’m giving away the music.

Awesome. Are they planning to launch a streaming platform?

Kind of, but user owned. It’s a co-operative model, so each member gets one vote on future policy - it can’t be bought and sold like Bandcamp was (or most any successful site) unless the members vote to allow it to happen.

Yeah the Stripe thing is disappointing but from what I understand they ARE looking at other options and are open to member input. Definitely worth joining and getting your voice heard.

Wish it were artist-owned. Bummer.

It is artist-owned, actually: artists are members of the co-op.

But also owned by listeners/consumers? Why not exclusively worker-owned?

It is live! And I am happy that I could release a new EP in sync with the platform going live (the 8bit commissions I mentioned on some Tonverk thread): https://www.subvert.fm/lopodyr/crocozor-croque-le-monde

I personally think it’s great to have alternatives to BC, no matter how imperfect. I always welcome attempts to stop the mass funneling of businesses and attention towards a shrinking number of platforms.

Got my page set up. Right now I just have a little jam I did on there, but planning to release stuff concurrently on both Subvert and Bandcamp in the future. I love the ethos of Subvert and hope it does well enough to keep kicking.

So they way it currently works is artists and labels automatically become members. Any listeners/consumers that want to become a member have to pay a one-off fee of $100.
Other listeners/consumers have no say.

No doubt they will have run some figures and decided going this way will help keep it afloat.
As I understand it, you don’t have to pay to release on the platform, it’s a donation model.

Read why we chose Stripe over PayPal

I wish there was actual link there to read, while I’m all for stripe vs ebay, stripe doesn’t work in every country and providing an alternative that works would be awesome.

looks nice otherwise, I might open an account…

Nice to see so many on here have joined. Have my back catalog uploaded also (founder member #98) its all free for members: https://www.subvert.fm/zyklen
