Substan music

I heard that Vhikk over at Jay Hosking’s channel…there some really interesting haunting sounds from that thing. Sort of organic and uneasy. I’m gonna listen to you track!

Splendid, as usual. Great track, like the whole structure and used presets!

Hey Substan, I really love your music you’re one big inspiriation that got me the digitone2!
Next thing will be your digitales 1/2 preset packs!

I have one question.
Do you compose, mix and record everything straight out of the Elektron boxes or do you mix later in a daw?
Everything sounds so clean!

I can’t decide if I go the Ableton + overbridge route or do everything in the boxes dawless until I record just the main at the end.

Gorgeous!

Thanks a lot … happy to hear that !!

In most cases, I don’t mix in the DAW, but simply record to the main output of the device and use the DAW (Ableton) only for mastering. Exceptions are pieces with more complex setups… modular, for example… then I do record multiple tracks and then do a kind of stem mastering (mix and master in one). I’ve given up on traditional mixing, as it only rarely really improves the sound. I find it works better to shape the sound from the start, and the arrangement also has a significant influence on the sound… for example, a piece that’s too overloaded will always sound somewhat “mushy,” no matter what you do in the mixing. Since we essentially control all aspects of the sound ourselves in electronic music, mixing isn’t absolutely necessary; for me, it’s part of the creation process… it’s a completely different story with acoustic instruments. The exception, of course, is effects and techniques that can only be achieved in the DAW.

Do you use song mode when composing, or just different patterns made in succession for intro, verse, drop etc?

Sorry for the very late reply!!

I actually use both approaches. It depends on my mood and the piece… it depends on how much freedom I want regarding how long individual sections should play… and how much I actually want to tweak various parameters and not worry about switching patterns. But mostly, I work without song mode and structure the arrangement with different patterns.
