Strokes (VST/iOS)

How does this work as a sampler? Can you drag something in and get unique ideas out of it? I’m always looking for new ways to restructure vocal melodies.

Do it!

Using the iOS version here; thing still missing is sample audition, so you have to know which sample you want to load to avoid multiple reloading, but it’s on the roadmap apparently. You can modulate pitch, start and end points (sample plays reverse if end point comes before start), filter c/o (LP, BP, HP), res, sample rate and bit depth. You can load up to 8 sample machines.

Thank you. Sounds pretty basic for what I am looking to do (creative sampler) but still a pretty cool little software workstation.

Version 3.11 was released today which adds multiple outs for the 8 voice engines (synths samplers) - a great addition!

I guess at core it’s a rhythm sequencer, but by carefully setting scales for modulation it’spretty neat for generating melodies you wouldn’t come up with otherwise.

Any good resources that demonstrate the generative melody capabilities in particular?

Have you watched the devs vids? Check this one for examples with the Braids engines.

Yeah, there are a bunch of videos but none of them had a name that made it obvious that it would demonstrate generative techniques. I appreciate you pointing to that specific video as a starting point.

If it does drag and drop from Files then Sample Crate offers sample previewing.

I have been using Dispatch but it’s a bit challenging to be in terms of routings and the routing possibilities…is it possible to use it on a channel with audio track?

Yes, It can be used on any kind of track. Use the link I posted further up and join the Discord if you wan’t proper support though, John is on it pretty often and is very helpful

Anyone know if it’s possible to change the patterns via MIDI data? I’m using Drambo, I see “pattern select” as a mappable parameter but it doesn’t do anything when I select it. I’ve been able to map the pattern selection ui component but it usually crashes when I try.

you can trigger pattern / note changes using MIDI notes, one octave lower than C0

Patterns are on black keys :
C#-1 = Pattern A
D#-1 = Pattern B

A#-1 = Pattern E

Note selects on white keys:
C-1 = Note Select 1
B-1 = Note Select 7

the next beta expands on this and should be ready in a few weeks :))

Thanks! you made an amazing music creation experience! I tell everyone I know about it. Looking forward to whatever you have in the next update.

Also welcome to Elektronaughts

To anyone readiing this: Strokes is a great midi sequencer for the Digitone btw

Can Strokes do “proper” polyrhythms that aren’t quantised to some polymetric multiple of 16th notes? e.g. can a bar of 7 and a bar of 8 and another of 5 all share the same bar length and loop at the same time?

I did try those proper polyrhythms in one of the early versions - as much as I loved the results, what I found was that when you get into that territory, the possibility space for the rhythms is so vast that if you aren’t number crunching or going in with a plan it becomes very difficult to steer things in a meaningful direction, or accidentally land on something inspiring.

I think part of this is due to the way that different sequencing modules in strokes react to one another - it helps keeps things coherent if there’s some kind of rhythmic “lowest common denominator” that’s shared across all the different moving parts - in strokes’ case that’d be 1/16th as you mentioned, but I would like to try loosening it up in the future.

This is really cool! I’d come across it before and thought it looked too complex, but this thread made me look again and I decided to grab the iOS version and try it out.

It’s a really interesting take on sequencing, and nowhere near as complex as it looks - the tutorial and well written manual demystified it within an hour or so.

I love the way things react to what is going on on other tracks, it lets you get really unexpected but interesting results. It’s fun to add/remove steps on one tracks and hear another track react. Lanes 5-8 and the weights are such cool unique features.

Having the MI stuff in there is great in terms of getting grooves going. Would be cool to be able to get multiple outputs on iOS to treat each sound with more effects, the included delay and reverb are fine but nothing too exciting. Edit: this is possible, my bad!

I’ve not really bothered hooking it up to other stuff yet, it’s a bit of a faff to do in AUM as you’re manually mapping MIDI controls but I reckon it might be possible to make some template device in Drambo with the various outputs easily accessible which would be more convenient.

I’ll probably pick up the Mac version too as I think this could be fun on there. There’s a bundle deal where you save £10 if you get both.

You can absolutely have individual outs in Drambo. I throw Strokes on the Main page, and send each Strokes channel to a separate channel in Drambo. From there, you can add effects to each channel to your heart’s content.

MIDI mapping in Drambo is super-easy. Spend the time to set up a template and you’ll be good to go every time you open the project.

Lemme know if you need any help with above. Strokes + Drambo is an incredibly powerful combination.
