BATTLE OF THE BIOPICS
Which did you enjoy more, Oppenheimer or Napoleon? And if you want to throw more in the mix, go for it. Hot takes are welcome (encouraged, even).

As much as I love Nolan, I’m on Team Napoleon. It was simply a more entertaining movie. By the end of Oppie, I was dying for it to end. I don’t see myself watching it again. Would definitely watch Napoleon again for the performances, score, and battles.

Having read a a couple biographies of Oppenheimer, and a lot about Los Alamos (I grew up there in the 80s) I was entirely familiar with his life, including before and after Los Alamos (he was only in Los Alamos 5 years total). Nothing surprised me in the film: It was called ‘Oppenheimer’, not ‘The Manhattan Project’.

FWIW, I saw it in a perfectly tuned IMAX theater in Denver on actual film projection when it first came out, and the sound setup was absolutely perfect (I had a perfect seat as well). I understand that was a rare thing compared to most people’s experiences regarding the sound.

Anyway, I enjoyed it. I actually agree with the nominations - especially Robert Downey Jr. My one comment to my wife after seeing it together was, “I’m pretty sure Oppie’s thoughts to himself had a lot less subwoofer in real life.”

Anyway. Sorry other people had a worse experience, or expected a different plot.

There is a brewery across from the Oppenheimer house these days, “Bathtub Row Brewing”. I had to get a shirt from one of their IPAs…

I don’t understand why Nolan choose to make the trial the main theme of the film.
I don’t think that trial was what people were really interested in.

At least on my side I don’t feel it had any value in this film and take near one hour.
If this had lead to stop producing nuclear material maybe but here…

I would have been more interested in a bit more science discuss, other characters emphasis. Maybe more test or showing a bit more uranium enrichment. Or more Russian technology stealing.

Here I had the feeling to spend too much of my time looking at this fake trial and too much discuss about Lewis Strauss… Or other second order characters. Lewis Strauss which has been put too much in front to my taste. And not that interesting after all.

Having watch the movie on my TV not suffer from the audio/dialogue. Or at least this movies sound when they begin to talk about trial… I don’t care much about dialogue at that moment.

Not a good or bad movie, but won’t watch it a second time. I had high hope, and to be fair had lots more pleasure on Peaky blinders… Or looking at documentary on similar topics.
Nolan I’m disappointed !

For a great trial movie that’s unlike the other trial movie, you can’t go wrong with “Anatomie d’une Chute”.

It also has a fantastic minimalist score by David Julyan. I really like his stuff (his album Hireth was a rare highlight from last year for me), and I have this perhaps romantic notion that Nolan should have stuck with him in a Spielberg-Williams / Lynch-Badalamenti etc. kind of way. I don’t have anything against Hans Zimmer’s stuff, and actually really like some of his scores (this was discussed recently on a thread on here recently somewhere), but I think there was something a bit more special somehow with the combination of visuals and music in Following, Memento and The Prestige.

I’ve come to the conclusion Nolan does reality bad. Really bad. Dunkirk was a borefest as well. Great visuals but oh so boring.

But films in a sci fi or oddball narrative he excels at. Inception, Batman Begins, Memento to name a few. But hardcore reality nope imo.

I liked it - it was a Nolan movie (and if you don’t know what that is by this point, I guess now you’ll know).

Better than Interstellar, I think; that was an interesting idea that ended in a very clumsy way.

People forget, I suppose, how quickly the nation turned its back on Oppenheimer and was willing to burn him at the same stake that we burned any others accused of communism during the second red scare. Oppenheimer’s security clearance inquest was as important to the life of Oppenheimer as his time at Los Alamos. When his clearnace was revoked, his career was over and his identity was shattered.

Most biopics wrap at a second life defining moment; this one couldn’t end with the dropping of the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki; the part where America’s adulation turned to castigation was important.

I’d say it was pretty good for a biopic - I usually really dislike those because a person’s life is mostly long boring parts.

Nolan’s moves are always a treat for sound. But this year I was most impressed with the sound in Poor Things. A refreshing change from other movies. Seeing it in the theater was a nice experience sound-wise, in contrast the usual over the top ear bleeding sound from other movies.

I recently watched this film, and overall I enjoyed it. I like Nolan’s films, but the way the audio gets mixed in his recent films is not pleasing. Tenet was horrible in that regards. Oppenheimer was rough, but not as bad as Tenet. The actors voices sound way too compressed at times, and they can be hard to understand. It’s really my only beef with his films.

but just got reminded here again, that “memento” was nolans’ doing…
and i’m still in struggle with this great plot idea of a movie, since an old friend of mine, told me his/this dream movie idea years and years before, while we were working on his final director student movie, then vanished into the hills, to pitch exactly this plot idea, saw that movie years later only to realize, well, that idea was obviously taken from him…

and since nolan is also taking all credit for that script, i have mixed feelings with this guy…
at least, zimmer is not involved again…and somebody like göransson got the chance to shine…

I love music in films from Maurice Jarre to Bernard Hermann. But i honestly cant remember the music in this one. Just like i cant remember any of the music in the charts. Must be getting old as Flash and the Pan said.

Just watched the movie yesterday…very underwhelmed.

barely a cut that’s longer than 5 seconds throughout the whole film.
The pace makes it feel like it’s all one long flashback, which may or may not be intended, but doesn’t work for me. I’d love some contrast.

I guess I gotta stop watching new movies
