Haha fair enough, I agree. I‘m usually quite agnostic about these things as most of these things aren’t as important for making music as people on forums make it seem.
I‘d also say it doesn’t matter all that much, but if your goal is to reproduce a sound exact 1:1 when sampling on the device itself, you might try a sampler and see if it works for you or not before buying.
I bought a DT1 about 5 years ago and just bought a DN1 recently, I don’t think I’ll ever outgrow them tbh and I paid €800 for them both (incl. decksavers, boxes and cables).
I’ve been watching old loopop and Cuckoo DT1 tutorials on this and thinking about getting one as well. I’m looking to pair it with my OG Digitakt, and it might replace my MiniFreak. Not knocking the MF, just looking to shrink my surface area.
I’m also looking at the Syntakt because I won’t have to learn about FM synthesis and can get more immediate results, but I also won’t have arps.
I’m going to keep comparing the DT1 to the Syntakt until one or the other comes available at fire sale prices. A good portion of the fun is in the due diligence and the hunt.
I succumbed to buying the DT2 - which I love - with the intention of transferring my projects, and selling my DT1.
In the end, I decided to keep it, and it is now my couch device, and I’m really enjoying the challenge of making ‘full’ sounding tracks on the 8 tracks.
Of course, if I want to develop any idea further, I can transfer them to the DT2, or into my DAW using OB, but I like the challenge of being economical with my sounds.
Was listening to an interview with (hip hop legend) Lord Finesse this week, and he was discussing the challenge of working within the limitations of the SP1200 back in the day, and that whole talk has got me super inspired to just be more intentional and selective with my sounds, making sure that EVERY sound in a composition is earning its place. Fun times.
The DT1 is STILL an amazing, fun, and inspiring device. And, sometimes, I think I am making better tracks on it.
the only limitation is mono sampling(sometimes it can be critical), otherwise just imagination.
I would consider the DT2 as single device, but for working in pair with other elektron boxes it’s easier for me with the DT og,
more devices/more possibilities - less time on each
I’m going to add analog 4 to ST and DT og…and the imagination draws scenarios of multifunctional patterns and arrangements with all of them, and when i sit down to work, i understand that 90% remains in dreams)
but when I work with only one device, the results are more interesting
It would be nice to access some alternative firmwares so it could be specialised either in fx processing, polyphony, stereo sampling or midi sequencing…
If I were elektron, I would be afraid of putting the code out there. B already did their best to steal the top level of it and implement the same basic workflow for the menu part of LM drum (like virtually identical) and I think that the only way you get alternate firmware for something like this is letting the code out into the wild and allowing people to develop it.
You really need a JJOS level of understanding of the original code in order to revise the entire firmware and legend has it that the JJ guy worked on the original MPC2500 as an employee of AKAI which is why he’s able to do it consistently. I don’t know anything for sure so I wouldn’t go so far as to say “this is what happened” but I think that those guys who did the unofficial firmware for the MD also got help from inside elektron and that’s one reason they are very guarded with the code (understandably).
Would be awesome to boot into an advanced fx processor or polyphonic sampling though.
Have to say, I’ve been playing with DT1 more often recently and it is just such a fun machine. I’m tempted by some things about DT2 but for the most part DT1 has such a nice workflow I’m a lot more tempted by DN2 than DT2 to be honest.
I also thought about making my OG the travel and on the couch device. It doesn’t make sense to sell it at current prices. And if it’s justt making beats, OG doesn’t really lack anything I’d miss from II. And like you’ve said, good thing is that you can always import OG projects seamlessly into II.
That being said, if I could sell OG for a half decent price, I’d do it . And I might prefer DN II as travel device. I don’t need 80% of the new features of both upgrades, but it’s nice not to worry about limitations and having options to grow on each project. But I like to approach DT II like I did OG and rarely use more than eight tracks.
Bave a S2400 which is a beaut but takes up too much space and finding the midi cc automation done via DN2 is buggy on S2400 end. So integration hasnt quite been as good as i wanted.
Benefit i see of OGDT for me is simplicity of 8 mono tracks via overbridge/ aggregate device amd elektron sequencing.
Im kinda seeing DT2 as overkill givimg the power i have with DN2 already. Think my behringer monos can be sequenced via OGDT and then my prologie via DN2 as it has note editor and thus helps free up some voices for DN2.
