Step Recording Mode?

Does anyone know if there is traditional step editing mode (or equivalent) . Where steps increment every time you enter a key? I always get lost entering complex patterns when i have to hold down the steps one by one.

Assuming no, what are other people’s techniques for sequencing long melodies?

AFAIK, recording with automatic step incrementing is not supported (like on a MPC).

For melodies on the OT I would suggest …

  1. use chromatic mode and record in real time using the trigs like a keyboard accordingly, or
  2. use chromatic mode with an external midi keyboard for real time recording, or
  3. use an external keyboard while step sequencing … if find, this is much more convenient, than to dial in the notes as a parameter.

In step sequencinig mode, I try to imagine the groove as a representation of the used and unused trigs. It’s like to see the pattern on a sheet of music. It might take some training, but after a while you will get the grip.

And don’t forget. You can let the pattern play during the input of notes. You can listen, add or delete notes at any time.

There is a step recording mode in Monomachine, although I never use it.
To activate this, you have to press STOP+REC

Now this combo doesn’t work on OT, and nothing on the manual or internet says that there is such step recording mode, so I guess you have to find another way of doing.

Soundrider’s advices are good.

I’ll add that if in your workflow you need to record every step sucessively but slower than the right tempo, you might try to get tempo to its lower value and hit you chords in recording modes with quantize on.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear, I currently enter my melodies using an external keyboard, holding down the step and pressing the note, but then having to clear the note length (so annoying) and sometimes the velocity (sometimes it’s good to have the hand entered varience, but other times i like to use an lfo to modulate in rhythmic patterns).

It’s just that disconnect between having to count and move my finger to each new step makes me lose track of where i am, and what would take 30 seconds ends up taking 5-10 minutes or longer. depending on if i make a mistake and have to listen through to find it. Maybe I’ll have to tab them out into a DAW and delete the notes as I enter them. Or get good enough to record them live reliably.

As a side note, i’ve started using a pad controller to program in slices. Even though I can’t trigger them live from the pad, it still works find as a data entry point. Wishing there was a way to select a sample slot using CC. (please let me know if anyone knows of one)

Damn. there have been a few things like this that i’ve read about, gotten really excited about then found out it’s only on MM/MD. I find the scattering of abilities between the machines interesting, it really does make them all a lot more unique despite the linked philosophy behind them. Though it does frustrate me some times.

Small tip: If you release the trigger button before the keyboard key, length isn’t set.

I’ve noticed that if I release the trigger before the keyboard key, it often doesn’t record the right note, and sometimes has weird ghost notes. Just my OT?

Assuming the OT still doesn’t have this, even though the DT does. Correct?

Correct in 2021. Still worth it ? :content:

Pointing out its 2021 in 2021, still worth it? Check your local thumbnail for details :stuck_out_tongue:

Specifying the year I meant it may change one day (which I doubt) and 2021 made me think about a specific topic…

Btw this forum’s date display isn’t the best for me, not used to '15 for 2015 for instance.
