Wasn’t there a standalone recorder for the tone or was it the takt where you could record directly to windows without any DAW?

right now I am happy to record in audacity … but when I play back I have MANY pops and clicks.
what bitrate should I go for?
and I figured 44100 hz
any other suggestions of configuring audacity to have a very clean recording?
just figured out how to monitor recordings, when recoding there are no clips and pops, only when play back.
every suggestion can help.
lenovo 420s, its an old machine but has SSD and system monitor does not show the cpu to be maxed out
I also tried big and small buffer, but no difference
edit: when exporting to MP3 the clicks and pops remain
