Standalone Maschine+

So the GUI on computer is exactly the same as the two screens on the the controller? I haven’t tried connecting M+ to a computer yet.

We listened on the main out. That said, I did have the Maximiser engaged on the master.

On the Machine+ I am struggling with renaming stuff like groups or sounds or anything… I should RTFM but don’t feel like it

Enter pad mode, press shift and you can see rename options.

I just found this I think I will jump on it, it looks really good and he has some really good videos on YouTube, has any already done this course ?

I’m really hesitating between adding a Maschine jam to my mk3 (this combo seems incredibly fun) or selling my mk3 to buy a Maschine +.

What would you guys recommend ?

if you are always near a PC/laptop, don’t get the M+, which is just about its only standout feature - to allow you to be away from the PC/laptop. There is talk of Maschine 3.0 so you should at least wait for that to be released. Maschine JAM is wonderful with the MK3, I don’t think you will regret getting one.

It depends on your own requirements and what you’re doing.

I have the M+ and mk3 now, and, for how I work, if my choice would be;

  • Mk3 plus Kontrol S61mk2 (or mk3)
  • Maschine Plus

… I would definitely take the mk3 and Kontrol. It just so happens I have the M+ and the Kontrol S61, but I find most (85%) of the time I’m using mine as a controller. I appreciate Standalone every now and then, more for experimenting/fun, but the serious work I do in controller mode (and really like the M+ for its feel/quality).

I haven’t really considered Maschine Jam at this point, but I can see how that would be a great combo with the mk3, and if that’s going to bring you more productivity, I’d go with that over the upgrade to M+… but I’d still get an M+ down the line.

If you were proficient with the MK3 first, then I can see you point.

However, I owned a MK3 from the same week it was released until about 2.5 years ago and used it maybe 5 times tops. The reason being, I didn’t take to the Maschine software when I was already using Ableton, so I ended up using a Push 2 with the computer when I wanted to use a computer.

Then I took a chance with a M+ and took to it straight away. I’ve been using Grooveboxes for 25+ years and as a groovebox, it finally made sense and in fact it excels and blows away the competition imho and became my most used music creation tool.

So, maybe removing the computer focuses some of our minds better.

Thanks for your answers @Starscream and @CCMP.

I think I’ll go with the mk3 and the jam. This combo seems even more fun and intuitive than the Push. We’ll see.

I think that’s a fun combo! Just to say that you can buy “B-Stock” M+s from NI’s official store on Reverb for around 690€ atm — I bought mine from them and while its box was a bit ripped, the device itself arrived in immaculate condition.

At that price it’s an incredible groovebox any which way you look at it.

I asked them for a deal and they sold it to me for $625. No box though.

Slowly getting the hang of the Maschine+. The hierarchy of arrangement, sections, scenes, groups, and sounds was easy enough to grasp (haven’t got to clips yet!), but it’s the contextual interaction of some of the buttons that’s taking a while to stick (specifically the three buttons Ideas/Song, Scene/Section and Pattern/Clip, and then less so the Group buttons) as someone new to the Maschine workflow coming from MPC where I feel there are less context dependencies navigating song elements.

Jam is a great complement, just the interaction could be a bit better, like you can’t have one thing in the jam (levels for example) and another thing in the maschine (macros). Or drums in the maschine and a synth in the jam. But just for the step sequencer, chaining patterns etc. is great.

Just to let you know before you make the purchase, since the first thing to get the jam for me was for adjusting levels and tweak knobs on the maschine.

I’ve had my + since launch and have never used it with my computer. Just feel I’m more focused standalone and with less options. I have Push 3 standalone but still use the + more due to the workflow. Prefer the Suite sounds from my Push though, blows away the + imo. If NI released an updated version that let you use Komplete, I think that is all I would ever use. A man can dream.

Has anyone hooked up a mioXL to the plus? If so, what are your thoughts?

Yes, it works except that the M+ doesn’t read the user assigned names of the midi ports, so they are all named MioXl midi port x etc.
This is a real shame as both the MPC One and Push 3 do display the custom names.

Dang thank you for letting me know this. I didn’t see this in any video I watched about the jam.

I thought this combo would be cool because it would have something on one side and another thing on the other. Like a spreaded Push 2, if that makes sense. But you saying this makes me reconsider my choice.

I’ve been having a ton of fun with this tip, thank you!

Great, isn’t it? The M+ has loads of little quality of life design features like that, and to me that’s a big part of what makes a device so enjoyable to use. You can feel the passion the designers had in developing the product. Which makes it all the more fun to use and discover!
