Really nice and clever stand! If you don’t mind, what’s a men’s shed? Never heard that term before but love it as I converted a back yard shed into my office at my old house.
Indeed you could just glue it together.
You can find wooden furniture legs at your local hardware store, or order from Amazon, Ebay etc.
Usually hardware stores offer to cut wood to any size you like for a small fee. (You can check on their website).
Simple wood glue should suffice (I guess?) for such a shelf, if you just want to put a few small synths there…
There’s all sorts of glues around, some strong enough to use on boats
Stuff like that can glue concrete and stone together.
Or stuff like this for wood.
The two part glues tend to be mush stronger, more suited to industrial use, but you don’t always need that.
Men’s Sheds might be just an Australian thing maybe. It’s a network of community centres with the aim of providing a meeting space for older men who would otherwise be isolated. They often have pretty good workshops with tools for woodwork. Alot of them do projects for community organisations- like making benches for parks or schools.
Not to be confused with the more common ‘man cave’.
That’s a nice idea! Haven’t heard of it over here (UK) but I am not yet the target market heh
Thanks all - really useful info and inspiration
Regarding the comments about wood glue:
Yes it will be strong enough…if done correctly. Here’s the basic stuff to know. (Disclosure, I’m a woodworker by trade but I’ll try to use laymen’s terms)
Regular wood glue is incredibly strong, a proper glue joint can be stronger than the wood itself. However, you need the two surfaces being glued to be raw wood, not painted or coated/ covered in anything because the glue needs something to “grab on to”. Also, you need pressure. I use clamps but if you don’t have those you can use weight (sandbags? Dumbbells? Milk crate full of canned food? Whatever) or rope (look up a knot that is easy to tighten like a “truckers hitch). You also want any cut surfaces that are to be glued to be nice clean cuts to ensure as much surface to surface contact as possible.
I would recommend doing a “dry fit” where you hold the pieces together the way they will be glued before you apply the glue and inspect the joints just to make sure everything looks okay and to get everything solid in your head.
A proper glue joint, when the glue is still wet and under pressure, will have a little bit of glue squeeze out. If you don’t have that you either don’t have enough pressure or not enough glue, both of which should be easy to fix before the glue hardens.
Keep a damp rag handy. Normal wood glue can be cleaned up easily (Before it hardens) with a damp rag which is another advantage over other glues.
I’m in a similar boat, as I need to get some kind of stands but not found anything that is ideal yet. I’ve been looking at tiered stands, so not a shelf but here are a few of the sites I’ve been looking at in case they are of interest:

This one has a few interesting designs but don’t look like the plastic cover would fit on some:

1 x https://www.thomann.de/gb/ultimate_mds_x_expander.htm
Ah, nice! Was looking on Thomann but didn’t find these. Think I’m going to have to map out my setup on SketchUp or something and have a play with ideas!
My central setup a couple of years back, using desktop stands from some place I cannot really remember right now but I’ve still got them and they will be put to use shortly
.
Anyone know (preferably) a clamp stand that could hold a synth module like a Novation Peak? I currently have the Peak on a small (old) bedside table under my main table, which is not ideal for live tweaking.
On my main desk I have the Matriarch and above that the Subharmonicon and DFAM on two of these laptop stands. So the stand for the Peak would have to be taller than those…
Would also consider something like this keyboard stand as a little more GAS/future proof solution but the problem is I only have about 25 cm to spare between the table and the wall…
