SSL Big SIx USB problems

I just switched computers, and I am currently working on a Macbook pro M1 with Ableton Live 12. on Sonoma.
Using the thunderbolt port on the Mac with a usb C cable, I also tried with usb A via a little hub (does not make a difference)

Problem;
Ableton is sending all channels correctly into the Big Six via USB, what is not working like before is that the Big Six is not sending out any audio back into Ableton. I know how to send audio back into my DAW when summing because I have done it many times on my old set up.
Tried firmware update but that failed… so right now I can’t summ, I hear all the nice additions of the board but can’t send it back into my projects.

Hope someone has an idea, I did send a ticket to SSL, we’ll see!

Thanks!

Are you using the cable the B6 shipped with? It is insanely finicky

I have tried several USB cables incl the cable that came with the board.

Are your ins and outs set up correctly in Live’s audio setup tab?

yes

Reviving the thread since my brand new unit is apparently dropping the USB-C connection every time macOS goes to sleep.
Currently using a new MacMini M4 base model. With the SSL USB-C to USB-C cable that goes with it. I’m using the BigSIX in an aggregate device with a Volt276 - but I doubt this is the issue since it also happened when I was running the BigSIX only.

Gonna try some things (using the USB-A cable, not allowing macOS to go to sleep). But curious if others are experiencing this.
I managed to update the BigSIX easily. It’s just a matter of dropped USB connection.

Maybe this will help? This looks obvious but it talks about creating a mult output device rather than a straight up aggregate device.

Thanks quite a lot. Missed these two - I scouted GearSpace, the Elektronauts, many sub-reddits…

The Multi-Out is worth exploring, although at that point, I suspect it’s a macOS thing more than anything.

Cheers.

I switched to a Macbook pro M1 and started having the same problems, what caused the problem was surprising:

the mic mode on the M1 was set to voice isolation, and as soon as I switched to ‘standard’ all problems were gone!

check out the orange microphone at the top of your desktop and switch to STANDARD.

Wow. Weirdest bug ever.

Mine is set to standard.
I guess I just needed to deprive my MacMini of any sleep at all.
Since then, no issue.

Had another issue I feel compelled to share here :
I setup an electric guitar and immediately started having some electrical click. A periodical clic. Only with electric guitars.
Tried all the cables I had, tried at least 10 electric guitars. Same periodic click. The weirdest thing was that it had to be environmental since my orientation in the studio changed the amplitude of the noise.
I spent about 3 hours trying to find what it was. Basically started to put the whole house in the dark in order to find out.
And just when I was about to stop looking for the source of this interference, my wife suggested that our neighbor had just turned back on the electric fence he uses to keep his two domestic sheep in his garden.
I asked him to turn off the fence. Noise gone. Immediately.

So here’s one for the archives : electric fences are not friends with a guitar pickup.
Never had that issue. And I hope it was the last time ever.
Not BigSIX related, per say. But almost send it back to Thomann!
