Squarp Instruments Hapax Polychronic Performance Sequencer

Love my Hapax.

However, I have a few issues. Would love to know if anyone else can relate. Here are three issues:

1) Instrument Definitions - lanes in wrong order

I put all my CCs/Automation lanes in a nice order in the text file. However on the Hapax the order is all messed up, everything wrong.

2) Unwanted MIDI pass-through

Hapax passes MIDI through when I don’t want it to. There is a setting that fixes this. In MIDI IN settings, you can set Notes/CC/PB/Pressure to either ACCEPT/IGNORE/REC ONLY.

‘REC ONLY’ fixes this problem. However, when you set this, the MIDI Matrix no longer receives MIDI. Meaning you can’t use it anymore!

3) MIDI Matrix changes don’t persist when changing patterns

Anyone use an external MIDI controller to control the Matrix? I do. But this is bugged. I’ll give an example:

Say you set a Matrix lane to control Swing Groove, externally. Change the Swing amount with your external controller. Now change pattern.

The Swing amount will change back to whatever it was. Changes don’t persist across patterns.

Now try changing Swing amount directly on the Hapax, with the encoder. Change pattern. The amount persists. Meaning, the Matrix is kind of useless for any external control - unless you only ever use one scene on the Hapax!

Has anyone else encountered these issues?

Can anyone test these and confirm they are bugs?

I’d really like some support on these. If you can confirm, please email Squarp and ask for these to be fixed.

I like the Squarp team, they seem like a friendly bunch, but I’ve asked (only occasionally, I don’t like to hassle them) for these be fixed for a while now without any success, and meanwhile many new amazing features have been added

Hello Elektronauts,

i also have a midi problem including Hapax and Erica Synths Steampipe (don’t know which device is causing malfunction), and would be grateful for potential solutions.

When i try to record knob movement from Steampipe to Hapax as automations, if i turn any knob on Steampipe down to zero and then try to turn it back to higher values, it just keeps stuck at zero. It’s not the case with some other synths that i tested. I’ve tries different settings on Hapax, but didn’t help.

Steampipe Midi out → Kenton Midi Merge-> Hapax Midi In B (TRS) (there is also Keystep 37 connected to Kenton Merge)
Hapax Midi Out C → Steampipe Midi In

Steampipe is set in MPE mode, DIN midi set to on for sending and receiving cc’s. USB options are turned of (although i tried connecting it through USB, but problem persisted.

Hapax is set to accept notes, cc’s, pitchbend, pressure and program changes.

I posted similar question on Steampipe topic, but nobody replied. Thank you all in advance, best regards,

Filip

Damn, the MIDI matrix not persisting is super annoying. I just tested and confirmed it myself. That’s definitely not how it should work and makes using a MIDI controller much less worthwhile. I was about to start incorporating one into my setup to control MIDI effects.

I just contacted Squarp about it

Thank you so much for testing and confirming! And also for contacting squarp!

Was thinking, surely other people must be using the Hapax and controlling stuff externally? In my studio MIDI goes everywhere to everything, its part of the fun. Maximum control. I really hope they get it sorted! Been asking for a while!

I checked in on this issue, and it sounds likely that a fix for this will be out in the next release. It wasn’t 100% though. Fingers crossed!

2.13 is out, and supposedly fixed the pattern change midi controller issue!

Effects: parameter modulation (via modMatrix) now persists correctly after changing patterns.

Edit: confirmed, mods (including ccs) are retained between pattern switches

Bug fixes

  • Project Loading: Loading project B while project A was selected did not correctly ask to apply the new BPM.
  • Drum track: Recording/overdubbing on a drum track could unintentionally erase existing events.
  • Song mode: Deleting sections sometimes removed the wrong section.
  • Pattern mode: Stopping a pattern (via mute + pattern pad) could leave notes hanging (this now properly sends note-off messages).
  • Autom mode: Fixed a freeze that could occur when recording dense, long automation sequences.
  • Effects: parameter modulation (via modMatrix) now persists correctly after changing patterns.
  • Effects: Copying and pasting effects could cause the pasted effect to be in a bad state.
  • LFO effect: “Once”, “2x”, “3x”, etc., could trigger unexpectedly without any active notes.
  • USB DEVICE: Some MIDI events could be not sent since version 2.12.

Ergonomic improvements

  • Step Mode Drum: Added new drumkit animation. Rotate Encoder 1 to toggle between drum pads and drumkit animation.
  • Confirmation Popup: cursor position is now always reset to the safer cancelling option.

Hey, I’m considering the hapax and I already have an op xy. Does the both work well together ? Can you sequenced and controlled the op xy with the hapax ? Thanks

Yes you can. I have done so but to be honest sequencing the XY with its own sequencer is better. i am mainly using the hapax just for synths are primarily the Virus TI. It is nice to use the Hapax scale modes and pads to live program the XY sequencer.
