Squarp Instruments Hapax Polychronic Performance Sequencer

HAPAX FTW, after reading a bunch of threads and reading the manual a few times i got this sorted. hapax main sequencer but ableton is sending clock and transport.

If there is one thing I could change about my Hapax it would have to be the buttons. I’d love to have Elektron style clicky-clacky buttons on it.

I get the feeling a lot of manufacturers would worry about being seen as ā€˜ripping off Elektron’ if they did this, but, I agree, those buttons/that feel would definitely elevate the Hapax experience.

Good buttons are just good buttons. Polyend also has good buttons in my opinion and it doesn’t feerl as if ripping off Elektron (but I very much dislike their encoders).

The tactile response of these buttons just adds so much to the experience. I think you get much closer to the feeling of an ā€œinstrumentā€.

One is a grid sequencer, the other isn’t.

Haven’t had my hands on the cirklon ever but I am pretty sure I am happier with my Hapax! : )

Same here. I was so jazzed about the Hapax when it came out, and have hardly used it since getting the Push 3. I haven’t put the Hapax away though because I may decide I want to use both for different purposes and moods. I just put my studio back together and am in the beginning stages of seeing what I can do with the Push 3, so if I gel with the Push, and finish setting up a hardware synth Live Set for it, I may decide I no longer need the Hapax. We will see. No hurry here.

I had a Cirklon v1 for many years – I’m personally much happier with my Hapax. But indeed, the keys on the Cirklon are very nice.

I bought the Hapax when it first came out. Loved it but needed money so off it went. Now, every time I want to try another sequencer I see the Hapax out there at 1199 and think, it’s just a bit too expensive for me so I buy a bunch of cheaper sequencers and then always end up selling them…lose a few hundred every time…just need to get another Hapax and be done with it.

Hope you’re enjoying your Hapax!

In case you haven’t seen it upthread, I highly recommend changing your main encoder to a big metal one with the finger indent.

Feels so much better with it on, easier use!

Yep, I posted the picture just for the clicky-clackiness. I also love my Hapax and while I didn’t have a chance to try the Sequentix, I’m pretty convinced that for my use case the former is a better fit.

I’d love a mechanical buttons edition tho!

I’d pay extra for a special-edition clickity matrix of hard button version. Never quite got along with pads.

Would you happen to have a link to that? I remember seeing that (and lovely replacements for the other encoders) on the Squarp Forum, but can’t find the post anymore.

Hey all,

Just stopping by to ask a question…

I’m thinking about picking up a Hapax. I’ve done all the reading and research I can. It looks promising. It’s my understanding, however, that there were issues with frequent crashes, earlier in its development.

I intend to use it live onstage, not just for launching preprogrammed sequences, but also for building sequences on-the-fly: i.e. recording, looping, and automating MIDI notes and CC parameters as played.

So, is it stable? Would you trust it in this context?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Cheers!

I’ve owned it for a year-ish and don’t recall having it flake out on me much.

I think it may have freezed up once?

I’ve had one lock-up in the year or so I’ve had mine, and that was during a lengthy jam. I do have a 1010 Blackbox in reserve in my live rig in case of catastrophe, but not had to use it yet.

It’s fantastic. I love the feel of the pads, and while mine came with custom colored knobs, the originals are really nice too. I use it daily and love the way it feels to play. While it’s not the mechanical clickety clackety joy of Elektron, it’s def a well made piece of kit.

Agreed, I’ve owned it for about a year and a half, daily use, only one freeze up (while I was live drumming).

The crashes were from people with 60 automation lanes, they stabilzed that a lot, i personally automate maybe 4 or 5 parameters, never had a crash. [with about 8 Tracks used, sequence rytm and OT with their internals, Digitone and Iridium with hapax (but use clips to send program changes to OT and Rytm.

I do partly pre programmed sequences, with 1 or 2 open for live play. The transpose track is cool, and you can midi route an external controller with it.

I didnt do a whole set yet, still working on singular tracks, but i belive the dual project stuff works for transitions.

I use Chroma Caps on mine and love them. These are their Thin Encoders:

There’s a Black Friday sale going on now, too.
