Squarp Instruments Hapax Polychronic Performance Sequencer

No but Squarp is never deaf to user requests and stingy with features too.

what stands are those?

Just got mine. I assume this is just like every other sequencer (and this seems an impossibility for any developer to tackle - no idea why) is the ability or have a mode where when the sequencer is stopped, hit a note and hear it. Elektron has this, but have to hold a trig and hit yes. Why is this so difficult to implement? It’s 2023 and should be BASIC functionality of any sequencer. It should be the first question proposed in the initial dev meeting. FFS come on!!! Ok rant off.

Other than that, the thing is a hit. I’m an absolute moron with this stuff and had it hooked up as my main brain, sequencing 2 of the separate voices on my iridium in under 1 hour, no manual. However after watching this guy Rob C’s videos for a 1/2 hour, I’m pretty confused as far as the advanced features. Perhaps I don’t jive with his teaching style. Loopop puts me to sleep. So I guess the manual is my next best option.

So I had a sequence (multitimbral) going on my iridium. I figured out that modifying CC’s for Filter cutoff and resonance in the automation section requires the sequencer to be off or you can’t enter them as they won’t save properly.

Finally, I messed with the effects section with my pattern going on the iridium. Can’t remember what I did as it was late, but HOLY BA’ATH PARTY LOYALISTS BATMAN, the Iridium came to life. Super stoked about this purchase. This is everything I could imagine in a sequencer, although I’m overwhelmed. The ability to press a step with sequencer stopped and hear the note would make this thing 100/100

Oxi One has offered this function since release, it’s very useful and I love it.

argh, those Encoders are SLOOOWWWW!!! @.@
Why can’t I set the Velocity when adding trigs … why do I have to press again …

There are a couple ways to set velocity when placing a step I use quite a bit. One is to set the velocity for one of the steps and then press and hold it. It will then use that steps parameters (like velocity) as the new default when placing new steps. For drums you can also enter velocity view if you hold 2nd and select the row you want to see the velocities of. Or you can add events with any velocity by holding 2nd and pressing the velocity level for the step.

Thanks, I’ll look into that!

What I want is to press a trig, hold it and then set my velocity, like I can do on any Elektron at the speed of light, all in two very quick moves.

But on the Hapax, when I hold it, the encoder does nothing. So I have to press again, which is then three moves.

So far I think I prefer Octatrack/Digitakt :stuck_out_tongue: But let’s see …

Oh wierd, never noticed that, I thought that was how it works for me when I place a step (press and hold a step and turn velocity encoder). When I’m back in the studio maybe I will find out I am totally crazy and I actually have to double press the step lol.

Curious if people here have some pointers / advice for using the Hapax Arp.

For some reason it never effortlessly clicks with my brain. I think maybe because I’ve learned using arps on Elektrons, so using one trigg, add secondary/third notes to that trigg, adjust length to taste, sometimes copy paste those around, and enabling the arp (on A4/DN/OT).

Also the mode on Elektrons where you can design your own arp works effortlessly for me.

I’m still stumbling around a bit with arps on Hapax, never really sure wether to start with piano roll chords into arp fx, or using the Harmoniser (which never seems to do fully what I expect).

With the modular way Hapax can arrange Fx types, I’m curious to ask how people here approach arps on the Hapax?

Exciting!!

They did imply last time I inquired, that a more feature-focused firmware release would drop around end of year / early January.

Really have been looking forward to this, great to see that things are moving.

They posted the same images in high resolution before this morning.

Looks like a compressor fx will be added

O wow, never heard of compressor in midi. But I guess why not

And echo fx!

That excites me more!

And midi file import!

I hope they also covered the basics…for example templates and/or defining a default project to load on bootup, one handed muting etc etc.

Also excited about new MidiFX of course, but my priority would be these little workflow feature updates.

Do I perhaps spot a hint of more than 8 patterns per track in the first image? I’m not sure but the way it says P1-8 in the screenshot that’s showing what appears to be follow actions like in Ableton and Bitwig miiiight suggest there could be two pages of 8 patterns, and this is reinforced by the second image and the 16 grey/white squares on the side of the top screen. Those are not there on the firmware I have anyway (which might be a couple updates behind, not sure).

I don’t want to get our collective hopes up too much though, I could be mistaken, but those things seem new.

In any case, pattern colors, the follow stuff, new FX, some type of mixer page (?) and the MIDI file stuff are all welcome additions. And I’m guessing there’s more.
