Somewhat of a boring topic.
My Akai sampler has a optical SPDIF out. My soundcard has a coax SPDIF input. I would like to connect these two (akai to pc)
I’m not sure which signal converter I need. I need one of these little converter boxes I think. Are there any caveats I should watch out for? I see these listed in stores in the video department for very cheap
I use Logic at 44.1khz. I’m not sure at which samplerate the Akai operates internally. It’s a very old sampler

The only caveat is that your audio interface will be clocked by the Akai.
That means that whatever sample rate the Akai is running on will be the sample rate you need to use on your computer.

Any soundcard or interface worth it’s salt should be able to resample the signal to whatever sample rate your PC uses.
I guess my RME interfaces aren’t worth their salt then.
guess not. Even my shitty motherboard audio resamples audio rates.
edit: checked. RME ASIO doesn’t convert sample rates, who’da thunk?
Does your card play audio at incorrect speed when you adjust sample rates? Mine is external clocked via wordclock BNC to the mixer so I’m fixed at 48khz. Not that I can tell any difference anyway.
I think it used to play at incorrect speed, but all the software just resamples the output nowadays.
If I force my DAW at the wrong sample rate, it probably still does.
Windows audio doesn’t care about sample rate and converts automatically.
I’m basically always locked at 44.1 or 48, otherwise my ADAT channels get cut in half.
yeah it should resample it. You’re setting the PC analogue ins/outs audio rate via the DAW and whatever input comes through the AES or SPDIF should be resampled into your DAW’s audio rate. - Unless you select the “clock by AES/external device” or whatever setting you have on yours.
I know I had a huge headache with mine when I incorrectly set it though as it messed up midi clock timing. Everything midi sync’d ran too fast.
It works, but there’s a high risk of artifacts.
I’ll also have 2 annoying blinking lights on my interface telling me to do something about it.
