Sound expander for Octatrack? WAS: Eurorack or a hardware synth that fit these needs?

Hi Nauts,

i know some of you own Eurorack stuff and may can help me.

I use my Octatrack as heard of my setup and will keep it this way. The OT is nearly perfect but lacks some decent sound generators. Here is what i use beside the OT at the moment:

  • Vermona DRM MK3, mostly for drums - i love the sounds of it
  • MAM MB33 - i like acidish basses and squelches
  • Axoloti - does a lot
  • Mooer Ocean Machine - reverb, delay, experiments
  • Analog Heat MK2 - mainly for the whole mix, sometimes for distortion of individual signals or for experiments
  • VCV Rack - sometimes, mainly as sound generator
  • some VSTi - from time to time but very rare

I was thinking about building a Eurorack setup which could cover the possibilities of the above listing, but i’m note sure if this really makes sense and if it would be possible without getting bankrupt. :okej:

Maybe something like:

  • MIDI to CV, multi channel support - i will keep my OT as sequencer and sampler, multiple audio outs (4 mono or 2x2 stereo) from the setup would be cool
  • i guess at least three oscillators and envelope generators
  • one or two multimode filter
  • drum modules for Bassdrum/Kick, Closed/Open Hat, Snare/Clap/Perc
  • a good reverb/delay module
  • maybe some sort of distortion/wavefolder module

It should be possible to generate and output more than one sound at a time, with multiple outputs for the individual sounds. The setup should fit into a suitcase like Eurorack case, so it can be transported. At the end, i guess, i’m searching for a multi oscillator (analog or good emulation preffered, not to cold and digital) setup with multiple outputs and some effects.

Any advice where to start? If not Eurorack, is there any comparable hardware synth? Maybe a Analog Four?

Thank you.

It’s definitely possible doing all this with Eurorack … but at some cost …

How all of this would fit into a typical rack could be planned via:
https://www.modulargrid.net/
and how much money would be needed can be assessed by this tool too.

You could also extend your gear with some groove boxes, check out some cases for DJ set-ups and integrate those boxes to have one unit to carry around.

Thank you for the link. I knew there is a website to put racks together but couldn’t remind the URI.

For sure.

After checking modular grid and some modules, i may first look for a already made solution, because all the interesting and multi functional modules are very expensive. Maybe a Analog Four, Novation Peak or some other kind of expander. It’s really hard to find a solution yet.

An A4 is probably a pretty good choice here. It would cover a lot of what you’re looking for, and would cost about as much as only the three drum modules, unless you went with really basic ones.

Analog Four has four independent voices and this great Elektron sequencer. If you are after single voices, it’s perfect, but there is some limitation for creating polyphonic patches. The Peak would also be a very good candidate for many tasks.

Yep, that’s what i tought also.

The four dedicated voices and outputs are really nice and would work very well with the Octatrack i guess. Maybe i can compensate this limitation by recording polys into the Octatrack. I do mostly minimal electronic stuff that don’t have much of super big melodies or pad sounds. I’m fine with mono voices which then can be blown up with modulation and effects like reverbs. I really liked the Digitone in regards of voices and size but the sound wasn’t really my cup of tea.

I’ll have to check some expander like the Analog Four, Peak…hmm…Deepmind…? Any other suggestions?

Novation’s Peak. You should definetaly check some vids of it. It sounds great. But i assume A4 would get along better with octa as they’re both from elektron.

I’m currently at it.

Just to add some preferences. It would be great if the expander/synth can model drums and percussive sounds as well, also bass is important. I guess the Deepmind doesn’t work, seem to lack deepness in the sound…i guess it’s more of a ambient/pad synth.

It’s not just pads actually but ppl prefer using as pads. I guess it suits better idk. Check out full preset videos, they might be much more self explanatory.

Also for drums you can always rely on minitaur and dfam (dfam is a bit challenging though)

Drums are from minitaur on this vid https://youtu.be/bUiBtzBiLQ8

Just a bit reverb and pitch bend and you’ll have a deep fat kicks

I absolutely love AR with OT… Has what’s on your list besides midi to cv and, does the above and a lot more, and it’s super fun! Clip from recent post:

Used MK1 is a good option and saves some scrill…
