Sound Design - Awkward Synths Sounds of Machine Drum and Rytm

i love the tuned percussion re-understood as synth. it’s awkward - unstable - gritty. so much so i want to build songs around those sounds. but they are fairly unreliable in terms of pitch accuracy.

the machinedrum says every 3rd step is a semi-tone, but that is definitely not accurate.

on the rytm, chromatic frequently does weird pitch things past an octave.

tonight i’m going to look at my drum - percussion sounds on the analog four and try to tame them into synth sounds.

any other suggestions? thoughts? ideas?

can’t speak to the ar, but for the md:

not all synth machines are easily tunable to concert pitch. for info on those that are, try this page

the exception is gnd-sin, which is 16 ticks to an octave, 4 to the minor 3rd, with 10 being a low d iirc.

the rom machines are 3 ticks to a semitone up to an octave in either direction (+/- 36 ticks), but after that there’s a jump in there somewhere. can’t remember where exactly but it might say in the tips & tricks document.

haven’t tried resampling yet. but i’m not sure that will help w/ obtaining concert pitch.

Always worked with 2 for a halfnote and enjoyed the weird harmonics xD. How about this tonal mode that is new with the unoffical update? I deleted all my favourite selfmade sounds wif the update :(. But they say the tonal mode would make it harmonically more accurate.

I haven’t experimented with that aspect of the new firmware yet, but it’s designed specifically to enable tonal harmony and sounds tunable to concert pitches. Based on some of the tonal material I’m hearing from other users I’d imagine it’s worth exploring.

I did today and its great. sad tho that u cant play the sine lil bit lower. I tried everything but i guess i nthe end i will mostly stick to the saw. And great that the default mode is still available. like the wird harmonics too for haunting pads. One of my favourite method is still using the e12 mashines and produce some notes with the retrigger.
