SOPHIE's sound design (Digitone or Monomachine?)

Very polished track! Did you create the video yourself too?

Anyone knows if the monomachine is still a good synth in 2025 ? I want to make similar sounds to SOPHIE or autechre but I don’t know if it’s a good choice for that because the synth is so old, any monomachine users that could give me a feedback on how powerful the mnm is ? Or is the digitone better for that ?

It’s powerful but it’s also kind of of-it’s-time. Like, if you have £/€/$2k that you’re happy to spend to sound a bit like autechre circa 15-20 years ago then go ahead, why not…

Get the Digitone II and be the Sophie/Autechre of tomorrow

The secret to Sophie and Autechre’s sound is not contained in the monomachine. It is contained in their brains. They used the tools available to them. I got a monomachine a year or so ago and have not been able to make anything comparing to them. I can make a few of the individual sounds. But what made their work magical was way more than a few iconic sounds.

Check out an ableton Push 2/3. Sophie used that a lot too.

Thanks! Yes but I’m not strong enough in 3D so I just used this tutorial as a starting point https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRcUnosS0uk

Absolutely awful and less than worthless in 2025. If you happen to find one, there are several Elektronauts scattered around the world who can assist you in disposing of it for a not too insubstantial fee.

I have a DN2 and would definitely not consider shelling out the amount of cash for a MnM THAT BEING SAID my bandmate has one (got it for like $900 lol) and it absolutely never ceases to amaze me. The filters are insane instruments on their own, it sounds like nothing else. The value is definitely still there, it just really depends how much you can leverage it and/or want one :full_moon_with_face:

I think this topic was discussed many times here. If you are looking to 100% replicate exactly MnM sounds, there is nothing similar out there (maybe Machinedrum). And even with the real machine in front of you there is a chance to fail with the reverse engineering of specific sounds (example: digi waves can be replaced and it will sound pretty different to vanilla settings).

If you want to make Sophie or Autechre-inspired music without spending €3k, DN2 is your weapon of choice along with DT2. Engines and effects share the same DNA with older machines, many algorithms are close. Less gritty, less flexible FX

Hi! I like to answer the thread.

You’re quite good at this

Also I’d like to point out that there’s no overbridge or post-processing of any kind in this video, but it sounds like the mixed and mastered original track.

Show us noobs how you figure out the sounds. Let’s see master at work :sunglasses:.
Especially interested in details like BDJeffMills, or Aphex Twin Bass in your Corevault.
It’s so on point almost like a witchcraft.

I posted about that here: Rhythm & Sound Dub Stab - #104 by Jeanne but I do plan on some videos about certain songs if I find something out about them nobody else has (this will include artists such as Jeff Mills and Sophie.)

I see i am not the only one interested to learn how to get to certain sounds.
I am new to dn, and sound you(beside vaults) post definitely made me curious and i would like to learn.
Will read up on stuff you posted in other tread, but yeah am i also excited to see the process, so it can open my eyes (or ears) of how to use fm to get to what i want. More specifically dn2.
So far I’ve been using only samples, with dt2, which i still love. I find good manipulation of samples as rewarding as making your own sound from scratch.
Thank you for answer and looking forward to some videos.
