Sophie Appreciation Thread

I can’t even remember how I heard about those early tracks - LEMONADE, HARD etc - but I was blown away by them (still am) - so ultra minimal but full, pop but weird, sonically stunning. Very sad to lose such a talent and obviously an inspiration to a lot of people.

An hour and 3 minutes into that Sophie and Danny Harle do a set together. It’s really incredible. A bunch of unreleased gems.

I’ve never been the same since hearing Bipp for the first time. That set me on this whole course of incredible music from Sophie and the PC crew.

i read somewhere she started playing with synths at the age of 8…

yeah she has a story about getting her first synths and gear from one of her dads friend who was emptying out a studio. I think she said it was mostly pretty bad lol but that’s what she started on.

this article mentions how she had recently been moving further away from the MnM and more into software, don’t know what vsts she was into. someone on reddit said they saw her using serum in a video or photo.

…well, that serum was part of her game is pretty much given for sure as much as mnm…
also ableton plus some max patches will be part of her overall sonic magic…

but that’s the whole point i’m afraid…end of the day, there was no secret weapon involved…
she worked with that same stuff we do…she was just way more into it…

how to treat ordinary common compression as she did remains a myst to many…
but big part of her secret is space…
not speaking of reverbs, speaking of the amount of stuff that’s happening per second and the carefully crafted emptiness between all single content elements…

sophie’s use of the monomachine is insane… i had not heard of her music before 2017 or so, it came out of nowhere imo - it had the same effect on me as when i heard aphex twin for the first time back in the 90s
