Lets say i have constructed a pattern, now i copy it to another slot. I want to modify the first pattern so that for example the base drum slowly increases its volume.
My impression is that the track volume control is not parameter lockable. Do i have to use the amp page for such a volume build up?
Or is the scene used for such a build up, i.e. i have to set a volume offset for the track, which is for example -127 as default, and when i press the scene button, the volume increases slowly ?
On the second pattern, i do not activate the same scene, i.e. when switching the pattern, the scene button instead fades the clap a bit, or does nothing ?
Is it intended that you have to plan your build up in such a way?
Is it possible to control the scenes via the octatrack ? I.e. send the information to the auto channel, and then the octatrack controls the scene changes and its intensity?
Does somebody do it with ableton? I.e. a vst knob that is automated ?
What are your song strategys here? How do you organize your pattern /banks ? Do you have a list what each pattern does ? Or do you just randomly select patterns, and care beforehand that it will match anyways?
Hi,
There are a couple ways you could do this:
[ul]
[li]Pattern locks per step: each step gets a louder volume.[/li]
[li]scene mode: you can assign volume or amp of sound to a pad. Press the pad for volume sweeps.[/li]
[/ul]
As for the Octatrack controlling scenes, I haven’t tried it, but it should be possible as apparently it can control A4 scenes.
For setting up a song, I usually just set up the patterns in an order I like, then use the pads/scenes for other variations as I record. I don’t automate much and instead do live takes until I get it right. That might not work for everyone but it gets the job done for me.
I tryed that now, i cant control the track volume with the scene or performance mode, but i can sweep the amp volume with performance mode, or set fixed value for the volume with the scene mode on the amp page.
It does not seem that the pattern remembers which scene is set ? I.e. scene state is not stored within a pattern? (Pressed or not pressed?)
Well it was this typical: oh wow, with the compressor i can really groove here, lets make it even cooler. (It was super fat at that moment, but i thought - twiddeling more will make it even more cool, but naaah - it turned to crap.)
I tryed to reload, kit, pattern etc - but the compressor setting is something global i think, which is not reloaded with a pattern. Ok its a global effect - but you could plock the other fx units aswell, so i thought with compressor i can p lock to a pattern.)
So the starting point /default value for the compressor would be appreciatated, i can start from where it sounded nice.
I found when i use the base tom as “baseline” synth , and with the compressor i can have nice bass overtones, which complement the melodic aspect of the baseline. (No the signal was not to “hot”, i monitored my soundcard input.)
I’m not at home to check it, but that sounds right: it’s not linked to patterns. Scenes are linked to kits in terms of the parameters you have mapped to them.
So, as you said, you can sweep amp volumes for sounds, which is one workaround.
I can’t remember them off hand, but if I recall correctly, you can get back to the default settings by holding down the compressor page button when you’re in that screen (ie. the second button from the right, immediately below the encoders) and pressing CLEAR.
Thanks for the tipp, i will try to reset it with the “clear” and holding down the button on the page.
Regarding the song structure: How do you create a consistent beat ?
Programm a Pattern, and copy it to several slots, and the mutate it slowly, and saving new versions of the used kit ?
I find it sometimes hard, when i program a pattern, and start a new pattern, that it does not match to the one i had previously done before, so when i start to switch patterns the variation on the pattern is too much.
I also often have the problem that i escalate to quickly, i.e. within the first pattern, just because i started only with drums - do you create a melodie first on other synth /DAW before you start programming your drum’s ?
