Some workflow questions about recording / saving

Heya,

Just want to get my head around the basic sampling limitations and how to go about optimising that.

As I understand it the max recording ram is 85.5mb. As I found in another thread:

@44100Hz 16 bit = 8min 7 sec circa
@48000Hz 24 bit = 5min 26 sec circa

Technically however, I could record for 5 or 8 min depending, and save this to the CF card?

Then repeat the process.

But as I understand it, the OT cannot play back 48k 24 bit files, so these would be useful for another purpose, say, in my DAW?

I’m thinking of doing a rather long sampling session with the OT, but I just want to get this process right, so I can record for 5 minutes, save, record for 5 minutes, save, etc, without losing material.

A further question: would anyone see any point in recording an Octatrack projects internal sounds at 48k?

16bit 44khz and you’re gonna be very fine, I promise!

Why do you need 48KHz? Doing some video work? 44Khz / 24bit works fine here. But I agree with mattleaf, 44/16 totally works fine, except if you plan to not take care of proper gain staging, or you want to record some very quite material and then boost the level afterwards.

Ok cool. I guess that means the recording time then would be somewhere in the middle of the two options I listed above.

I think my point was, the OT can record at 48, but only playback 44.1.

It just seems odd to record at 48k if the material inside the machine is at 44.1, but I guess this would be more reserved for live recordings, rather than internal sampling?

The manual of OS 1.25 says in section [The Audio Editor/Audio Editor Functionalty/File], page 105:

“SAVE SAMPLE COPY will save the complete sample to the Compact Flash card as a new
file. Audio outside the trim section will also included. Both mono and stereo samples can be
saved, in either 16 bit or 24 bit format, depending on the original sample format. Recorder
buffer content is always saved as stereo samples, and the bit depth of the saved file
depends on the settings made in the MEMORY menu, which is covered on page 39. Note
that if you have chosen to load Flex samples in 16 bit, a 24 bit sample will be saved in 16
bit if you choose to overwrite the original file. Saving a sample automatically saves the
sample settings as well. It is therefore not necessary to use the SAVE SAMPLE SETTINGS
operation right after the SAVE SAMPLE COPY operation to fully save all sample
properties. This option is not available to Static samples.”

It says on page 39:

“RECORDER FORMAT selects in what bit depth the track recorders will sample. 24-
bit and 16-bit settings are available.”

It says on page 146, [Technical Information / Hardware]:

“… advanced dual DSP system, 44.1 kHz, 24 bit D/A and A/D converters …”

I would understand this as “both is possible” … “16 and 24 bits load/record/save”, which can make a difference concerning headroom w.r.t. dynamics. I understand the manual such that if we have selected 16 bit and load a 24 bit format, then the sample is converted to 16 bit, but not generally.

Can the OT really record at 48kHz ? The specs say only 44.1 kHz, at least.

I think its easy to get confused when things are worded such as “each project only has 85 mb of memory”

Its more a case of “you can record 85mb of audio before you need to save, and then can record 85.5mb again”

Sounds silly, but its easy to feel very limited when in fact, its basically infinite (well, within a 6 - 8 minute limit)

44.1 24bit sounds like the winning ticket!

OT is always 44 sampling rate, you just choose bit depth.

Geez. Not sure where I got the idea it could record at 48k then
