Fantastic help. I just got my Octatrack on Monday, so obviously not quite there yet indeed, but soon. Got just a bit worried there’s something wrong with the machine as I bought it second hand.

Its a deep machine. I like to think of it as having three layers.
1 Sampling layer - 8 recording tracks
2 Audio Layer - 8 audio tracks for playing back samples, or running external audio through, or FX mangling.
3 Midi layer - 8 tracks for midi sequencing external gear.
All three of these layers are independent, available at any time, all the time, and can be configured how ever you like. So actually its a 24 track machine, not 8. That’s why people find it a tough nut to crack, its three machines in one, plus a mixer… the scope of possibilities is vast.
