I’m a elektron user for 2 years I have sold my OT to get the DT2 because I wanted to be able to record separately all my tracks into my daw (unfortunately overbridge for DT2 is still missing but this is for an other topic …!) so now this is my set up : DT2 is a brain and two synths into externals inputs, one as a bass and the other for chords, pads or momentarily live keyboard playing improvisation. Recently I have started to go deeper in midi control and figured out how to set up CC controls for each of my synth, and so I am in front of a whole new world of possibilities.
So I come here today to get some advices and ask people to share experiences : for you what is the best strategy for a live set up ? I wonder if I should set up a preset that I use on every tracks and so I would know it very well, or should I make different CC control destination for individual tracks or pattern. And also I wonder if I should control some parameters that are already available on my gear panel (for exemple cut off frequency and so I could parameter lock it) or maybe use CC control for hidden features instead.
I know this is quite a personal decision and I have already try different settings but I would like to hear about some of your choices on it.
Thank you
I’m sequencing 2 synths from DT1, using 4 MIDI tracks for each synth (for example MIDI track 1-4 control MIDI channel 8, tracks 5-8 control MIDI channel 9). This gives me 4 sequencer lanes with 32 MIDI CC’s available for each synth.
I try to keep the MIDI CC’s somewhat consistent. Track 1 has 8x CC’s for Filter attack, decay. Sustain, release, cutoff. resonance, envelope amount, envelope velocity or similar. Track 2 is similar to above but for amp controls. Track 3 is similar as well but for envelope 3 controls. Track 4 is similar again but for oscillator parameters
This allows 4 different lfos to be assigned to different parts of the synth easily, also the 4 sequencer lanes allow for far greater control of call & response lines with different program change locks or complicated conditional trig interactions
Sweet I hope it’s useful to build a template from DT2 would take it to another level with the extra CCs, LFOs & nameable parameters
I’ve been using this set up for a while but only just realised recently how useful it is for chords! If programming chords on a single MIDI track all notes trigger at the same time… splitting the chord across 4 tracks allows each separate note to be microtimed to give a much more realistic performance
The nice thing with Elektron sequencer is that you can offer parameter locks, conditiinal trigs and additional modulations to other synths.
So yes, filter and envelopes are the first CCs I program, as they drastically change the sound.
It’s good to setup program change signals too, as you may want to change the whole patch with the Pattern. But it can be a bit tricky with the Digis, some practice will be necessary to get it right.
