Solid State Logic .. SSL Big SiX

Which hub do you use? I’ve not had any luck with my OWC Thunderbolt hub. I get pronounced dropouts.

Used these both with no issues.

Amazon.com Anker 575
Amazon.com CalDigit TS4

I use a 6 foot ish USBC cable. It’s not a data cable but it was fast charge ready.

I think the main issue is the cable, not the hub. I used my Big Six successfully with different hubs/docks (currently Caldigit TS4), but tried tons of longer USB C cables, which all resulted in dropouts or no connection at all.

The key is to understand that the Big Six USB port is USB C, but basically “USB 2 in disguise”. So you need a good/active USB 2 cable.

Here’s the answer from SLL support, which finally sold my problems:

"You could use an active USB cable in combination with a short standard cable. This will amplify the signal and should provide enough voltage to get it across the 5 meter distance.

Note that we don’t recommend this specific cable and it is given only as an example of this type of product."

Cable selection was a process for me as well. Very picky device about cable choice.

Thanks for posting about active cables. I didn’t know that was a thing. I’ll put that into my notes in case this ever comes up again.

Im note the BiG SiX is picker than others products but you have to be aware what cable you get to get specific data transfer you need. It doesn’t require high speed data but if you have a very long cable you need to make sure it supports data transfers as well.

As mentioned above, long USB-C cables just don’'t work with Big Six, no matter how good they are and if their data rate is high. If you need a longer connection, use an active USB 2 cable and add a very short USB C cable.
